:I should have pulled you out sooner,: Misalin said quietly, two days after they finally escaped Feredar.

It was the first time they’d actually talked since then. Isshiri had been so tired; it had taken everything he had just to keep moving. And they couldn’t afford to stop, not for long. She stood out too much against the grey, late-winter landscape.

But it was pouring, and trying to slog through that would’ve probably done more harm than good. Especially for him. So they’d found a depression between two hills that was almost a cave, and she’d dug it deep enough to be a real shelter, and they’d curled up there, just resting and being close again, for the first time in far too long.

And now…now he was aware enough of things that he could process more than just staying upright, staying on the move, getting away and getting home and getting safe. He could hear more than a constant, wordless hum of love and worry from his dragon.

She was probably right. He had definitely been collared a lot longer than the six weeks they’d planned. But they’d had to delay twice--once because she’d nearly been spotted, and then he’d been locked away where she couldn’t reach for a few days. He wasn’t actually sure how long, total, he’d been there, but…it was longer than six weeks, and it had been…it had been…

He shivered and backed away from those memories.

Still, when they finally had escaped, everything had gone flawlessly, even though he’d been no help at all and she wasn’t fully grown yet. She hadn’t dropped him, they’d flown a good distance before she’d had to stop, she’d easily evaded the arrows shot after them…he hadn’t even gotten nicked by her claws when she’d grabbed his shoulders and taken off.

“If you had,” he finally said, hoarse and weary, “we probably wouldn’t’ve gotten away so clean. That’s more important. And I’m fine.”

She opened one eye to glare at him.

“…it could’ve been worse,” he tried instead. “They never figured out I was a spy. They never got you. Plus, I got what we needed.”

She heaved an impressive sigh and closed her eye again. :I still should’ve gotten you out sooner. You had what we needed weeks ago. And you’re so thin, and you’re barely sparking at all, and I can feel how--:

“Can we not?” he interrupted. Because she was right, just because it could have been a lot worse--and he’d seen what had happened to some of the others, and he…

:All right,: she said quietly, turning her head to nuzzle him very, very gently, like he was made of glass, and her scales felt rougher than he remembered, sharper, more like--

He shivered again, and tried not to feel any of it too much right now. “We got out. They didn’t hurt you. And after I talk to Mother, and Uncle King…we both got out, and we’re still together. Let’s just…focus on that, please?”

She just nuzzled him again and withdrew her head without further comment.

He closed his eyes and let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding, more drained than he liked to admit just from that conversation.

“We’ll be okay,” he promised her, very carefully resting his head on her flank and trying to relax. “We got out, we’re together, and we’ll be okay.”

She rumbled softly against him as an answer, and he drifted off to sleep to the sound of the rain above them, wrapped in the relative safety of his dragon’s coils.
