Imi didn’t actually use her power much--not many situations called for it, especially since she hadn’t figured out how to control it like Dimana and Shane controlled theirs. Rubika’s gift was sort of all-or-nothing by definition, but the rest of them were supposed to be able to go in small doses; just a little bit of wanting, just a little bit of conflict; just a little bit of rot.

But Imi was always all-or-nothing, too, ‘cause it was so hard to only let a little bit out. So she didn’t use it much, ‘cause it would be overkill. Besides, her gift, more than the others, drew way more attention than they really wanted. At least until they found Grandfather or the Mariko lady Rubika kept asking the old man about.

Sometimes, though…sometimes, Imi decided she just didn’t care. And maybe that was her right, since she wasn’t even twelve yet, to do stupid and impulsive things when she saw someone she wanted to hurt. And this was one of those times. It was cruel, and maybe a little bit petty, but Imi couldn’t quite bring herself to care.

After all, these people--these people who were supposed to be her family--had abandoned her, casting her on the uncertain mercy of complete strangers. And, true, it had worked out that much better for her in the long run--her mother’s relatives had never been kind to her, and through the Family she’d met her sisters--but it still hurt. It was still wrong.

And now…now…now she was what she was, and she could do something about it.

So, when they stopped on the moon where her mother’s family lived, Imi decided to stop caring about how much attention Pestilence would bring. She slipped away from the ship, a soft green shadow in the dark, ghosting down still-familiar streets towards their house.

It only took a touch to set all of them to rot.

Can't... 100% blame Imi for this, especially because she is eleven and vengeful.
