Not all the time. More and more lately she can forget about him; can close her eyes to sleep, can look away from her children. But he's not the sort of person you can forget completely, and he still haunts her.
He's long dead, she tells herself, when she looks in the mirror and sees his face behind her. God will protect you, she tells herself, when her scars and her bones ache on rainy days. You are free, she tells herself, repeating it like a song.
