Rose #18, Sherry #1
Name: Greenling
Story: All Great Things/Standalone
Colors: Rose #18 (The rose is a flower of love. The world has acclaimed it for centuries. Pink roses are for love hopeful and expectant. White roses are for love dead or forsaken, but the red roses, ah the red roses are for love triumphant.), Sherry #1 (As laces just reveal the surge)
Supplies and Styles: Graffiti (Lilith Fair Day 5 Main Stage), Novelty Beads (hold on to me)
Word Count: 601
Rating: G
Warnings: None.
Summary: More Karafic, set a couple of days and two to four chapters forward from where I've written up to. Kara and Sophie have a car, and are enjoying a very awkward drive out of Colorado for Reasons. There is adorable.
Comments, criticism, and questions are all appreciated. Edit: for the record, this is the bit.
"Can I look at your books?"
Sophie broke the silence first. They had been heading west through the mountains for long enough that Kara had lost track of time, and it seemed like neither of them knew how to talk to each other after everything that had happened. Kara had imagined that it'd have to be her, eventually, to ask Sophie if she knew how to drive or if they would have to stop. This was the longest period of driving she'd ever done in her life, and her eyes were starting to blur from trying to pay constant attention and not look too close to the sun.
"Sure, if you're that bored."
Sophie didn't meet her eyes. "I don't get books very often."
Her tone didn't sound offended exactly, but... Kara kept her eyes forward as Sophie leaned into the back seat and rooted around for the backpack. Ichi stood up and started thumping his tail against the seat.
"Do you want to get some books somewhere once we get to a city?" Sophie didn't respond immediately. "Wish I still had my phone, we could just find some wifi and then we could both have as many books as we wanted."
"I don't know how we could pick them up on the move."
"I meant like downloading books. The ethical questions seem kind of irrelevant in the light of the world possibly ending."
Sophie sat up on her knees suddenly, looking at Kara. "There are books on the internet? Real books, not just webpages?"
The car slowed down a little as Kara ran that through her head. "Do... you not have the internet where you're from?" The thought was bizarre. There was internet in space, there was internet in Alaska, where did they not have internet?
"We weren't allowed. Weren't allowed many books either." Sophie slid back down into the seat with Kara's English book in her lap. "Definitely not like this."
Kara's stomach did a little flip-flop that she shoved back down. "Like a textbook? What's in a school textbook that could be objectionable?"
Sophie pointed, and Kara slowed down again to read it. There was nobody on the backroads anyway; just the three of them and the sun peeking through the evergreens.
The Rose did caper on her cheek—
Her Bodice rose and fell—
Her pretty speech—like drunken men—
Did stagger pitiful—...
She read the whole thing, then shrugged awkwardly. "I can't see the problem."
"What's it mean?"
Sophie's voice was quiet. Kara thought about it for a moment, feeling warm all of a sudden, then looked over to the poem again. She couldn't think of how to respond.
"Roses on cheeks, I mean. Symbolism. I'm not stupid," Sophie said, and Kara felt the words all bunch up in her throat.
"It's-" She turned her eyes front again, and gingerly hit the gas. "It means blushing."
"Blushing?"
Sophie looked skeptical, but she went back to the book and went quiet for a bit. Kara shifted in her seat a bit and got back up to full speed. The roads were still clear, though it seemed like they were heading to higher and higher elevation, and that probably wasn't good. It was something more important to think about.
"I don't think you're stupid," tumbled out of Kara's mouth.
Sophie was quiet, head turned away. All Kara could see of her face was a little outline beyond her hair.
"I know," Sophie replied, almost inaudible over the hum of the engine. Then, "I... don't think you're stupid either."
Kara nodded, wishing she at least had the radio to focus on.
