"I love you."
Ruth hadn't meant to say it. She and Simon had only been dating a couple months, and they were taking things slowly, because this wasn't exactly normal, and it was just...too much, too soon.
So she laughed it off, and kissed his cheek, and changed the subject.
"I love you."
It had only been a few days since her first, blurted confession, and she already regretted laughing it off the first time. Because she meant it, even if she hadn't meant to say it. But she still wasn't sure he was ready to hear it, even if she was ready to say it.
So she waited until he was asleep, then dropped a feather-light kiss on his cheek, and whispered it into his ear.
"I love you."
The third time she told him, she was looking right in his eyes and it was perfectly deliberate, even if it was still impulsive. And he blinked, and paused for a moment, and then--to her surprise, he didn't get nervous, or trip over himself apologizing for all the things he couldn't offer her.
Instead, he relaxed a little, and cupped her cheek, and whispered, "I love you too."
