Film Festival
The film was a coming-of-age story about a deaf kid in a big circus family.
But I didn't come to see the film. I came to see the director.
A lively, freckled, dark-haired girl, who smiled like a burning star and held her cane like a weapon. A girl who laughed like firecrackers and cicadas, and talked to cats like they were people. A girl who took my heart to places I thought were made up.
Except, that girl's a woman now.
And she's exactly where she always wanted to be.
*****
Smooth grey words, cool, and measured, slip from my first love's mouth. Big, bright, flashing words fly from my first love's hands. So casually sharing that fire I'd always seen in her.
Now the whole world knew her truth: that she was moss, hiding steel, hiding silk.
Then she wrapped me in a quick, tackly hug, and wanted to mess with the raw quartz point I had on a long cord around my neck. I let her hold it up to the light, and watched that prism burn the years away.
*****
I'd heard a lot about Rilla, a little at a time, watched her gradually come into focus in my mind. She was funny, and perceptive, and a little cantankerous. Movies and cats were her favorite things. Her cane matched her glasses, and that was important.
Kelsey really loved her.
Tonight, I finally saw the real thing. She was standing in a huddle with the other directors. Them in blazers, her in ripped jeans and an old tank top.
I saw that she really was that charming.
I saw her and Kelsey, fitting into each other perfectly, after all these years.
*****
My boss doesn't see too well, and Kelsey sees too much at once, so someone had to drive, and that's where I come in.
All I knew about her was what I saw in the flyer for the festival.
Our Daily Bread (and Circus), directed by Rilla Parry.
Yeah, this was definitely Outer Barclayverse. No overlap with what I thought of as my world.
But, the movie was good. Plus, I just love meeting people. Especially people like Rilla, people who can create, who talk in loud voices and laugh easily.
And the occasional lack of context keeps work fun.

But as for your fic, which is why we're both here, this just oozes with love. I may have started sniffling briefly between the end of the first bit and the start of the second. Just a tiny bit.
