They were never meant to be here, to be bonded and tied down and broken the way they are now. It tears them apart inside, cracks their bones and spills their blood in a way that goes beyond the physical, though there was plenty of that too.
They have been claimed and collared, broken in like horses and forced to work in ways they were never meant to.
The wolves look at each other in the quiet of the evening, watch their sleeping charges, feel the heaviness of the bond around them, and want nothing more than to sleep.
Yes, they both were pack animals, creatures that needed a group to fel stable and supported. They operated best in groups but this? This is wrong, this is twisted and bizarre. It's nothing like the packs they had before this.
One moves to paw at the other, a soft whimper slipping though jaws that ache to tear into flesh, to break bone and have blood between it's teeth. They want it so badly it hurts but no, they are not hunters anymore. They took that away from them too, the humans made them servants, goards and shepherds rather than what they are meant to be.
One of the humans moves, mumbling dark thoughts aloud as they toss and turn in sleep. The wolf longs to ease them of their suffering, to rip the throat out of the girl and end her awareness. But they won't, or perhaps the better word is can't, because the wolf values their life. At least for the moment. Ask it again another day, it may gie a different answer.
And soon enough the four of them will go back, back to the dark places that keep them all from the world at large. This is a test run, a trial to see if the four of them can survive in the desert for a few days by themselves. The people above them want to know if the four can work together, can keep each other alive in a hostile environment.
They can, at least for now.
No one knows when this ends, when someone errors enough that they are shot, the bond is broken and one of the wolves is left alone by the other. But neither of them will fault the other, they've agreed on that long ago.
If they go, they go and the other will hopefully follow soon enough. There has been a growing history between them, a bond as strong as the one with their humans, if not stronger, and they will wait for each other at the gates to the beyond, patient and tranquil, until the other joins them.
They don't pray for that day, not exactly, but they dream of it. They dream of freedom, of safety and a life outside of human captivity, of the bonds around them now and the words that keep them obeying over and over again.

This isn't a universe I really intended to do much with but after poking this, I'm trying to resist the urge to do more. I love the wolves and the horiblebad that is the forced bonding between them and humans and like, the bonds they would form with anything but their human counterpart to remind themselves that they have some will of their own

I am honestly not too sure. They might be but I'm not entirely sure.
