novel_machinist
Story: The Devil is a Gentleman
Theme: Literary / Octarine 12 The trouble is that things never get better, they just stay the same, only more so
Word Count: 153
Summary: Alan and Carl's history, how they met and how Alan learned about the end
Rating: PG13
Warnings: Talk of death
Notes: I didn't think that this fit in the main story anymore, but I like it and wanted to show it to people. This is well, background and can show you how Alan's feeling during the main story.
The trouble is that things never get better, they just stay the same, only more so.
Alan and Carl were constants in each others lives. They were aware of and accepting of all the little, inconsequential details that made them who they were. Knowing those dark details didn't make them uncomfortable any longer. Even the big tragedies in their lives were suffered together. Alan's came first, his mother made a long, anguished phone call about his father's heart attack. Alan never felt welcome after he came out. It wasn’t as if his family was openly hostile. They were more aggressively ignoring him. He mentioned bringing people he was dating over, but his mother always changed the topic or ignored him completely. His father barely spoke to him. It made the man’s death a lot more painful than Alan expected.
"We were never close…" Alan commented over the phone. "Not after-"
"Don't worry about it, buddy. Ya need company?"
"What about the wife?"
"She can miss me for a night."
