15. white lie

Dan has always been able to see the fairies.

He doesn’t know if Jack or Katie do too, and he’s never been able to ask. He wonders whether their mom or dad do, and sometimes he thinks Dad might, that every so often he looks straight at a group of them. He never brings it up, though, just in case.

He knows not everyone can see them. He learned that at an early age. He also learned that people get uncomfortable if they get mentioned, and when people get uncomfortable they get mean.

So he keeps his secret to himself.

1. white noise

The fairies inform him of his father's death.

Not in words, of course; that's not how they communicate. But there are always a good deal of them hovering just above his head, happily forming shapes in all kinds of colors, carefree.

Today, though, there are a lot more. They're muted. They hover a lot closer.

He understands, somehow, that they're trying to cheer him up.

When the phone rings, they glow a soft, comforting blue; his mom is on the other end, sounding broken, and the fairies glow brighter, surrounding him.

He swallows hard. They help him keep it together.

5. the white house

They love the bar.

Dan can tell the instant he walks inside. They start flying around with wild abandon, forming hearts and circles in bright, happy colors. They look at home.

He hadn't been sure, coming in, that he'd be able to do this, to fill his father’s shoes. This place brings up so many memories, and the grief is still so fresh, a not-yet-healed wound on his soul.

Seeing the way the fairies light up, however, Dan can't hold onto his doubts. They fly away as easily as the fairies fly around the room.

This is the right decision.

3. don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes

He and the fairies fall into a rhythm. They flee the troublemakers, letting him know who to keep an eye on, and they cling to the ones who need the most cheering up. They help him see beyond the mask most people wear, to recognize, if not their souls, then maybe their essences, underneath.

He turns out to have a knack for it. Before long, he can do it on his own, but the fairies still help him occasionally.

Sometimes, when he's just made a difference in someone's day, he swears he sees them winking at him.

He smiles back.

14. as white as snow

It occurs to him, one stormy Saturday, that the fairies seem a little dim when it rains. It makes him wonder if they need warming up too.

So the next day he goes out and finds a heat lamp, which he places behind the bar, out of the way of anything, but still easy enough to spot. If anyone asks, he says it's an heirloom he can't bear to part with, and he watches as the fairies flock around it on gloomy, rainy days.

He's not sure if they really need the help, but they seem to appreciate the gesture.

6. red, white, and blue

He lets in a pretty redhead one night, just after the bar has closed. She tells him that she left her purse, and he nods and mentions putting one behind the bar. He's about to retrieve it when fairy after fairy suddenly flies above her head, forming into a word—Annie, they spell, in a bright, beautiful red.

He can't tear his eyes away, and he's briefly struck speechless, so he almost misses it when she says, “Yours are also spelling your name.”

Startled, he meets her eyes. She smiles prettily, and he's struck speechless again.

The fairies smile too.

11. white wedding

Before Annie, he never knew anyone who could see them, and it's the same for her. It's a revelation for them both.

Especially since, as they find out, dating with fairies is interesting. They're mischievous, nudging them along; the first time they kiss, they start flying into the shape of fireworks, even more brilliant and awe-inspiring than the real thing.

The fairies are present at their wedding, too. Thousands of them show up, forming into a large pink heart on the horizon. Dan spots it first, pointing it out to Annie, and she laughs and kisses him hard.

It's magical.

2. white picket fence

They’re glowing.

Wherever Annie moves, they flank her, bright and happy, and they both occasionally pause and watch this display, wondering. It’s protective and celebratory all at once.

When they turn distinctly disapproving at dinner, just as he starts to pour the wine, Annie halts his hand. “Do you think…?”

It seems hard to believe. They’ve been trying to have a baby for years, but the fairies’ behavior quickly fills him with hope. “I’ll be right back.”

He returns with several pregnancy tests. Annie takes them into the bathroom, and five minutes later, they check them together.

They’re all positive.

8. whitewashed

The day he meets Salvatore Corlioni is a surprising one.

He’s first surprised by how genuine he seems. He’s also surprised by how good-naturedly he handles another man hitting on his wife. And he’s surprised by how much the fairies like him.

They are cautious at first, but it only takes a few minutes before they flock around him and his wife, obviously giving them their stamp of approval.

They don’t get to talk a whole lot—the bar is fairly busy that day—but when they leave, Dan isn’t surprised to realize he’d like it if they came back.

9. white rain

It’s not quite ten at night when the fairies suddenly get restless; dozens more suddenly fly into the bar, and then they’re all celebrating.

It only takes him half a second to realize exactly why they’re so happy.

He grins widely and tells his customers he’s sorry, but he has to close early, and their last drinks are free for the inconvenience. When one of them asks why—not so much annoyed as curious—he grins even wider and says, “I’m about to be a father.”

The fairies glow brighter. They’re grinning too, he thinks.

That’s when the phone rings.

7. wite out

The fairies’ feelings about most of the individual Corlionis make perfect sense to him; they flee David and Nicoletta in obvious fear, Leo in clear revulsion; they’re fond of most of the others, Teresa, Gino, and Elisabetta in particular, and occasionally he wonders if any of the three can see them too. He’s almost sure Teresa can, at least, but he’s not sure how to ask.

When he first meets Maria at age seven, up and dropped off one slow Wednesday by her mother, he’s surprised by how quickly they avoid her.

He wonders what they see that he can’t.

13. white wine

David has gone to the bathroom, leaving Teresa up at the bar with him—it’s a slow night, mostly empty, only the two of them plus three other patrons at a table.

She sips her wine and smiles at him. “You can see them too, can’t you?”

He looks up and gives her a smile in return. “I can.”

She looks delighted. “I’ve painted them before.”

“I’d love to see it.”

That December, Johnny brings Teresa in again. “This is for you, Dan,” she says, handing him a small painting.

The fairies in it are so perfect they’re almost real.

12. off white

The fairies inform him of his mother’s death.

It’s much like how it was with his father, hordes of them glowing in muted colors, hovering nearby. When the phone rings, the nurse telling him the news, they comfort him.

It’s not as much of a surprise as his father’s—his mother has been sick for awhile—and the sad inevitability of the situation is reflected in the way they glow.

They surround him as he calls Jack and Katie. He doesn’t know if they can see the fairies, but he silently wishes them their support anyway. It can only help.

4. the white album

Dani asks him to be there on her first day as bartender, and he can only oblige his daughter. She’s a natural at reading people, at listening, and his heart fills with pride as he watches her manage everything admirably. He thinks that the fairies also look like they might just burst with happiness. It makes him smile.

When the night is over and the door is locked, Dani looks at him, smiles brightly, and asks, “So could Grandpa see the fairies too?”

That’s when it really hits him.

He’s passed on so much more than just his father’s bar.

10. white flag

Dan has a dream.

The world around him is beautiful and richly detailed, and he finds himself standing in the middle of a meadow, flowers everywhere in bloom, fragrant and lovely. There are thousands upon thousands of fairies in the sky above him, more than he’s ever seen before, and the sight briefly takes his breath away. Slowly they begin to lift him up, higher and higher, up past the tops of the trees and into the clouds.

He isn’t frightened. He’s happy. He’s ready.

He dies that night, in his sleep, at peace.

It’s all thanks to the fairies.

Oh, this is so lovely. I just really like the thought of Dan receiving so much delight from the fairies, and spreading that delight around.

This is fantastic. I love the relationship between him and the fairies, I love the bits with Annie and Teresa, and I just love Dan. This fic works so well, and in such an engaging way.

Great job.
