“Looks like you’re all set up, Boss.”
Zach tapes the IV down, so it wouldn’t slide out while I’m sleeping. Or when I wake up in the middle of the night, sweaty and disoriented, feeling like I have the worst flu I’ve ever had.
I actually do remember how that felt. I was twelve. There was some pretty stiff competition, though, and just thinking back on those days makes the biannual infusions feel worth the trouble.
“Thanks. Hey, can you turn on the show for me?”
He slapped his forehead, the blow buffered by that goddamn wool cap he wears every day, even in the middle of summer.
“Oh yeah, that’s tonight, isn’t it?”
“Like it always is.”
Zach picks up my phone and fiddles with it for a while, turns the volume all the way up. Then he sits it on my nightstand and goes to sit in the living room until he’s needed. Until I call him.
First, there’s a commercial, and I don’t really pay attention. Then the show begins.
Tonight, the explorers are finally going under the ice.
The underground city wasn’t a legend after all. But, there’s something wrong. The explorers aren’t alone Strange things move in the shadows. And the sound they make… Well, it’s inhuman and organic at the same time. A low, wet rumble. It even freaks me out a little, and I’ve never really gotten scared of things like that.
Zach walks past my door, probably headed for the bathroom.
“…What the hell is that?”
I just smile.
“Kelsey. She does sound effects, remember?”
He pretends to shiver, just as I’m starting to shiver for real.
“Jeeze. Remind me to stay on her good side.”
I knew she was working on a gift for him, to say thanks for cleaning up her kitchen and bathroom. He helped her with a lot of things, so his apartment was probably Kelsey-Craft-Themed by now.
“You already are.”
“Right… Don’t get nightmares, okay Boss?”
I listened to the rumble in my best friend’s throat. The sound of faceless, icy horror.
And knew that, if the nightmares came, she’d scare them all away.
