Do or Die

I wish this had happened to you.

Not because I want you to suffer like I did, or want to take you down with me, or anything like that.

It’s because you might have gotten something out of it. Might have made all the injections and necrosis and puking a necessary evil, instead of just more tired bullshit to bitch about.

You were always so curious, and so terrible at being a person, that it almost seems like you were born for this. You would have taken to it immediately. Spent your last few years giving voice to what you saw, trying to feel out the shape of the universe.

Not like me.

You wouldn’t have wasted all your limited time scrambling around on the floor, trying to scrape up the pieces of your shattered Ego, because you knew you were nothing without it.

Wouldn’t have recoiled from what you were so sure was the most horrifying thing imaginable.

A world without me.

Maybe you’d have given it some meaning. Maybe you could have helped me finally understand you, and everything else.

But, it didn’t happen to you. It happened to me, and I didn’t even try to make sense of it all.

I just died.

And now, I’m doing it again, and it’s no less pointless.

All I’ve learned from this is that there’s no worse thing to be than nothing at all.

I wish I could know what you would have learned. I’m sure it would have been something a whole hell of a lot better.

Maybe knowing it would help.

This is all so telling, in conjunction with the last piece, how much I think they really admire each other.

Oh, Martin. He really feels worthless, doesn't he?
