Age Nine
Ineku watched while the doctor worked on Utoki's hand.
They'd stolen some of Dad's wine earlier, and got a little loopy and had missed the warning hiss. Utoki was twelve, and dragging him back had been hard. What if he hadn't managed in time and Utoki lost his hand or died?
"Please don’t die…"
He felt a hand on his shoulder. "He won’t." Ineku looked up. Dad smiled a little. "We have the right antidote, thank the gods."
Ineku slumped against him.
"But as for the wine you two stole..."
Ineku winced, but barely heard Dad's lecture. Utoki was safe.
Age Twelve
Ineku watched Dad and Utoki’s caravan leave. I am old enough...
He heard his mother, and looked up. "I know you wanted to go with them," she said, ruffling his hair.
"Moooooom...." He ducked away from her hand.
"Here, I thought this might cheer you up."
It was a medicine book. He looked up at her. "…Did you look at my journal?"
"No," she said. "Utoki told me you wanted to learn this."
"So he did."
"Go read your book."
He let her hug him that time, then wriggled free and ran off to find a private place to read.
Age Sixteen
Telari tugged Ineku's hand. "Come on! Before it's over."
This was his third caravan trip, and last summer Telari had kissed him, so naturally he'd sought her out again first thing as soon as all the camels and horses had been settled.
"What?"
"Shh. It's a surprise."
She pulled him up to the roof of her family's house and turned him north, towards the mountains.
"Oh!" There was a storm on the other side, and he could see the flashes of lightning reflecting off the tops. "Oh, wow..."
"Isn't it amazing?"
He grinned, and took her hand again. "It's beautiful."
Age Nineteen
"I don't understand."
Telari wouldn't meet his eyes. "You're hardly ever here, Ineku, and I..."
"My family has property here, I can stay..."
She shook her head. "It's not that. It's more...Everything I have with you is...you know, we've spent less than a month together, all told? I...I can't keep holding my life for one week out of the year with you."
"Is there someone else?"
She nodded. "Oseri."
"...Is he a good man?"
She nodded. "He makes me happy. And he's here."
Ineku kissed her hand, then slowly let it go. "I'll miss you."
"I'm sorry."
Age Twenty-Two
Ineku aimlessly wandered the Palace’s halls. He was here with his father and brother to help rework some import taxes.
But right now the King was busy with something else, Utoki had gone to a tavern, and his father was gambling with old friends.
Ineku paused at the door to the library, and considered staying here instead of helping in the infirmary. Then he saw her, which put an end to thought altogether.
"You are allowed in here, you know."
Ineku caught his breath. That voice...
She didn’t look up from her book, but he thought he caught her smiling.
