Marie found herself in front of the portrait of Jon Michel and herself when they were toddlers. She sighed audibly.
“Is that you?” Jehann asked walking up behind her.
She nodded her head and touched the painting delicately.
“You were a cute little girl,” Jehann said touching her shoulder lightly. She didn’t look back at him, but placed her hand on top of his. He squeezed it tightly.
“Who is the other child?”
Marie touched the little boy’s face. He had the same blue eyes as she did. They looked so much alike that they could have been twins.
“My brother,” she answered him.
Jehann looked her at back puzzled.
“But Prince Pierre doesn’t have black hair.”
Marie turned around and faced him.
“That little boy was the first Prince of Norme, my father’s original heir and my blood brother.”
Jehann looked at her quizzically.
Marie smiled lightly. “My parents had a son before I was born. He only lived to be five.”
“I don’t remember a prince before Pierre,” Jehann said speaking of Marie’s newborn brother.
“Well you would have been a child when he died. I only have faint memories of him and my mother loved him dearly. She still mourns his death.”
“I’m sorry,” Jehann said quietly.
“I can’t help but think that if Jon Michel had survived, things would have turned out differently. My mother and father would still be happily married and…” she trailed off.
Marie looked down at her hands and played with the trimmed sleeves of her dark blue gown.
“But then I think that I wouldn’t have had little Betha and Margot. I do love them so,” she said smiling slightly.
Jehann kissed her on the forehead surprising her.
“What was that for?” She asked.
“I just wanted to do it. You’re such a beautiful person, Marie.”
She blushed deeply.
“I was on my way to the nursery to see the children, would you like to come with me?” She asked shyly.
Jehann nodded and held out his arm. Marie blushed again and slipped her arm under his.
