Dragon Scale Green 5, Flame 2: Diplomacy
Author: Kat
Title: Diplomacy
Story: In the Heart - Fantasy AU
Colors: Dragon scale green 5 ("Always speak politely to an enraged dragon." ― Steven Brust), flame 2 (coal)
Supplies and Materials: Bichromatic, eraser (traditional fantasy AU, I guess?), brush (estival), beading wire (this image),
Word Count: 824
Rating: PG
Summary: Lars encounters a dragon.
Warnings: none.
Notes: I was going to try and make this less silly, but... eh. For shipwreck_light's meme prompt.
The initial gout of flame might have taken his head off. As it was, he had good reflexes and a convienent nearby rock to duck behind, so it only singed his helmet.
Still.
"That wasn't very sociable," Lars said reproachfully, resurfacing. The dragon squatting at the mouth of the cave snorted.
"And why should I care?" it asked. "You're just here to kill me."
Actually a quite reasonable concern, Lars thought, if founded an on incorrect thesis. "I'm not here to kill you," he said, and held up his hands. "Look, no weapons. I just wanted to talk."
The dragon considered him for a minute. "What if I don't want to talk?"
Lars shrugged. "Fine by me, I get paid either way. But you might want to consider that the next guy probably will try to kill you." More than probably, since the next guy would probably be Danny, but he didn't feel that mentioning that at this time would be productive.
"Why?" the dragon asked, but it seemed more rhetorical. "You know, I just wanted a nice comfortable cave. I need someplace cool to sleep and this is a really good size, except--" It waved a claw in the direction of the village. "Humans."
"Yeah, I feel that pain," Lars said, thinking somewhat ruefully of his own childhood. Of course, then it had been itinerant trolls rather than dragons, but it was the same principle-- two species trying to find a comfortable place to live and running headfirst into each other, entirely by accident. "There's nothing nice where you come from?"
The dragon shifted, looking somewhat uncomfortable all of a sudden, and how a large, scaly, essentially lizard-like face could look uncomfortable... "Well, there is, but there's also my family."
And Lars was way more familiar with that feeling than he was comfortable admitting. "Rough relations?" he asked instead, sitting down on the rock with a clatter.
"No-o." The dragon drew the word out into several syllables. "No, just... well, family. My parents ask about my hoard and my siblings are always more successful than me and I really just wanted a quiet place to live. With no siblings."
"I have six," Lars said. "Siblings, I mean. I feel this pain too."
"Ouch," the dragon said, appreciatively. "I've only got three but that was plenty."
"One's really all you need," he agreed. "Anyway... sorry, what's your name? Mine's Lars."
The dragon blinked at him for a minute, then said, "Estivas."
"Estivas," he repeated. "Cool name. Anyway, I was going to say that this is maybe not the best place to stay? Like you said, humans."
Estivas let out a huge sigh-- thankfully nonflammable-- then flopped down on the stone beneath its belly. "But I don't want to move. And where would I move to?"
"The beach?" Lars suggested. Estivas shot him a look at least as hot as its breath. "Okay, sorry. Does it have to be a cave? Can it be like a barn or something?"
"Dunno," Estivas said, lifting its head. "Why?"
"I got a friend." Actually, he had several friends, but he was thinking primarily of Gina and all that rocky, useless dowry land she still had. "Might be a few places you could camp out on her land. It's worth asking, anyway."
"Hmpf." It puffed a quick splash of flame through its nostrils. "Good hunting?"
He shrugged. "Never been, but she says that's about all the land's good for. Nobody lives there, either. You'd have it all to yourself."
Estivas glanced in the direction of the village, and shifted uncomfortably. "Yeah, but... I think I'd get lonely."
Lars wasn't sure if that was a question or not, but he answered anyway. "I got another friend who loves an-- dragons." Maybe best not to insult a dragon by calling it an animal, even if it technically was. "If I let her know you're there, I'd probably have to tie her up to keep her away. She'd love to come and talk to you."
Not that Ivy making friends with a dragon was necessarily a good idea, and Gina would probably kill him for it, but hey, maybe Estivas and Ivy could work out their more reckless ideas on each other. He added, "I can already tell you two will get along."
"Hmpf," Estivas said again. "Fine. When do I have to move?"
"Whenever you're ready." With a promise of relocation, Lars could keep the villagers away from Estivas's cave as long as he needed to. "Just, you know, let me know and I'll get everything set up."
The dragon regarded him for a moment as he pried himself off the rock. "So... out of curiousity," it said, "why didn't you try to kill me?"
Lars grinned. "Because if I did, I'd be dead, and that wouldn't have done anyone any good, would it?"
"No, I suppose not," Estivas said, and laid its head back down on its crossed feet.
