It was David's birthday, and Ruth had told him he could have whatever he wanted for dinner.
It was David's seventh birthday, so she really shouldn't have been surprised when he presented her with a long list of different kinds of candy and his biggest, most engaging smile. The smile that he deployed rarely and with care because he knew damn well she couldn't resist it.
Besides, a promise was a promise, and it was his birthday. So she sighed, cut the list down to a reasonable size, and braced herself for the sugar rush of the century.
