It was so stupid.

She'd asked Chris to put the toilet seat down. She asked him to do this roughly once a week. It should have been just another eye-roll and a lowered toilet seat.

But it wasn't.

"What did you say?" Cecily hissed.

"I said," he replied, enunciating precisely, "that maybe if you weren't such a bossy bitch we wouldn't be having such problems."

"I asked you to put the fucking toilet seat down!" The kids weren't home, thank God, but then Chris would never have done this in front of the kids. "Since when is that grounds for World War III?"

"Nothing's good enough for you anymore!" he yelled back. "Nothing I ever do is good enough! All you do is pick and complain and never a goddamn thank you!"

Cecily slammed her hands on the counter. "For putting the fucking toilet seat down? That's basic manners! You don't get a cookie for basic manners, Chris!"

"I can't even believe--" He stopped dead in the middle of the sentence, and threw his hands up. "No, you know what, fuck this."

"Where are you going?" He was turning around, snatching his keys out of the basket, walking straight-backed toward the garage-- "Goddamnit, where are you going?"

"Out," he snapped, and slammed the door.

People change and they grow and sometimes that growth is apart. It's one of those things that ... I don't know. There's no bitterness anymore there.

Ouch. Yeah, that marriage isn't holding together very well.

is it wrong I chortled a little until the end?

The chortling made the end all the heavier.
