"Are you leaving?"

Summer hadn't meant to ask it. She hadn't meant to say anything at all. Of course Felipe was leaving, packing his things up on his new-bought horse, tightening the girth as the animal blew in protest. It was obvious even to her, and people didn't like it when she asked stupid questions.

But he didn't say anything, just turned to face her and touched his hat. "Yes, ma'am. Doesn't seem to be much space for me here."

There could be, she wanted to say. She would make the space, if he wanted. He could go on living with her-- well, no he couldn't, because everyone would say she was an immoral woman and then no one would come to her surgery and she wouldn't be a doctor anymore. But he could live with Zack. She'd seen the way they looked at each other, and if it made her feel so lonely her throat closed over... that didn't matter. They deserved to be happy.

But she couldn't say that. If he wasn't... she knew that not everyone understood, the way she did. Not everyone had a sister who loved women. Not everyone even knew that there were people who loved their own sex, and she couldn't ask him to acknowledge any feelings that he might not want to speak of.

She couldn't say it, so all she did say was, "You can come back. Always. Anytime."

He smiled at her, a little sadly, then took her hand in his. He always held it so gently, as if she was made of porcelain. "I know. Thank you."

Summer held on, when he would have let her hand go. "I mean it," she said, insistently. "You can always come back."

He stood still a moment, then lifted her hand to his lips. "I know," he breathed, and kissed her knuckles.

Then he let her go, and left.
