Summary: Sam does not shock Rachel.
Notes: Takes place in an alternate February 2010.
“You sure you don’t want me to go in with you when we get to the hospital?” Rachel asked Sam, giving him a sidelong look. He could easily read the skepticism there. “How are you going to get home?”
“I’ll have them call me a cab,” Sam said. “I’ll be okay. I know you keep checking your phone for a reason.”
“I’m just a little worried about Charlie. He’s been sick,” she said. “But he would be the first person to get pissed at me if I left a friend stranded at a hospital by himself with a dislocated shoulder.”
“I’ll be fine,” he stressed. “Really. I can use the time alone to think up an excuse to tell Eileen. Right now all I’ve got is avoiding her for as long as I’m in a sling, and I think she’ll notice that.”
Rachel raised an eyebrow. “You know, you never said—who’s Eileen?”
“Torey’s wife,” he said, “and probably my best friend.”
Rachel only smirked at him; it was much less fun than the bewildered expression he usually got in response to that line. “Sorry, Sam,” she said, “but if you want to shock me, you’ll have to do better than that. I have three boyfriends, two are also sleeping with each other, and now it turns out the third might be considerably less straight than he originally thought.”
“Well, I’m impressed,” he said, then grinned. “It’s fun to say things like that to confuse people, though, you have to admit.”
She smirked back. “True.”
“Hey, you don’t suppose Eileen will buy that the sling is really some kind of ridiculous post-modern fashion statement, do you?”
“I’m going to assume she’s not a complete idiot and say no.”
“Yeah, you have a point there.” He sighed. “I am so screwed.”
