The thing that no one ever got about being a historian was that he didn't actually study history.

Lars could see where that could be a little confusing, but it was true nevertheless. He didn't study history. History, in all its majesty, was a droning list of coronations and battles and numbers and statistics; who killed how many people in what year, which king died when and where. Boring.

What Lars studied was the stories. Gossip, really. Who married who and why, whose clever insult started or averted a fight, whose incompetence destroyed what.

Much more fun. And more real.

It really is. I'm not a Real Historian by any means, but the gossip really is the interesting bits. Actual History is boring and doesn't teach you all that much when you get right down to it.
