The weekend arrived faster than Sam thought. After Ed called him that Wednesday, time blurred between hanging out with his sisters, reading, and catching up with Emma. She didn’t forget to remind him not to hide away from Ed. He wouldn’t, but he didn’t know if he could take the way his stomach knotted up when he thought about it. Sam nearly didn’t eat dinner Thursday night after Ed sent him a text about meeting at the creek around one on Friday. It worried his parents when he could barely get two bites down without downing it with water. Of course, his sisters couldn’t stop giggling, but Sam got them back by teasing them about their current crushes in front of their parents. The looks and denials he received were priceless.
However, Friday arrived before he knew it and he was a mess. He barely got out of bed to shower let alone go downstairs to eat. He changed his outfit three times before he settled on a black sweater and dark blue jeans. He didn’t know why that took him two hours to pick out. Sam tried not to get too nervous on his way out the door. Of course, his sisters’ cheers did help him calm down a little. At least he knew if something happened he could go to them.
Sam arrived at the garden that wasn’t too far away from their houses a little bit before Ed. He took a seat and played with some of the grass by his feet. He took his glasses off and smiled at the faeries that flew by him or sat near his hand. To people who couldn’t see it, it look like a small field that needed some work done with the long grass and trees with extra branches. However, it was actually a very beautiful garden where faeries of different classes lived and enjoyed themselves.
As human Sam and Ed wouldn’t be invited, but they were welcomed after they saved a Summer Faerie whose wing got caught in a bush. After they saved her, Rosa invited them to the garden. They were the only two humans to see it in centuries. Rosa always visited them whenever they came by or when Sam needed to clear his head. Today was no different, she flew over and took a seat on his hand.
Sam smiled as he looked down at her. “Hi Rosa. Why don’t you take off the spell and sit next to me?”
Rosa nodded as she flew off his hand and into the patch of grass next to him. It didn’t take long for her small figure to become bigger, until she reached the size of the average human and rested her head against his shoulder. Green vines wrapped around her arms and legs as sunflowers and roses served as her skirt. Her pink eyes turned up to him as her equally pink hair brushed along her shoulders and her wings flexed behind her. “Hi Sam, what troubles you?”
Sam bit his lip before he ran his fingers through his hair. “Um, I’m meeting Ed here today.”
“That is not unusual, but you seem distressed. Why?”
“Me and Ed have something important to talk about.”
Rosa lifted her head as she happily clapped her hands together. “Are you two going to mate?”
Sam’s face matched Rosa’s hair as he spluttered and messed up his hair even more. “I-I, well, you see…”
Rosa giggled as she hugged Sam’s arm. “I am elated by this news. Many of the Summer Fae wanted to join you two before summer’s end when their power starts to wane. Now they can go into Fall without any regrets. That takes a toll on a Summer Fae.”
Sam sighed as he shook his head. “Did everyone know, but me?”
“You are smart among humans, but among Fae you are quite dumb not being able to see what is in front of you.”
Sam groaned and resisted the urge to place his head in his hands. “Thanks Rosa.”
Rosa giggled as she opened her mouth to tease him some more when she heard, “Yeah, thanks Rosa.”
Sam and Rosa turned to see Ed walking over to them. He wiped his hands on his black jeans before he gave a small wave. Sam noticed that he wore an open red and black flannel shirt with a white t-shirt underneath it and a black beanie on his head. It was an outfit Sam saw on him many times, but today it seemed to stand out to him.
When did Ed become this handsome again? Sam turned back to the grass as Rosa flew over to Ed and gave him a hug. “Ed! Sam told me the wonderful news!”
Ed laughed. “He did? Well, what did he tell you?”
“That he recognizes you’re his…” Rosa started when Sam stood up and walked over to them. “Rosa, may I talk to Ed please? Can you tell the other faeries to leave us alone for awhile?”
Rosa smiled as she flew over to Sam and crossed her arms over her chest. “What will I get in return?”
“My sister knows a place where I can get you those human ribbons you love so much. You keep them at bay and I’ll get you a whole box.” Sam said.
Rosa thought the offer over for a while before she nodded. “Okay, but a full box. I will check to make sure.”
Sam grinned. “I know not to cheat a faerie.”
Rosa laughed. “You are wiser than many humans as well. I will acknowledge your request and keep the other Fae at bay. We will talk again soon.” She waved at them before she turned small again and flew away.
Sam let out a sigh of relief while Ed laughed and shook his head. “Faeries are always tricky.”
Sam nodded. “Not if you’re upfront with them.”
Ed placed his hands in his pockets. “That’s true.”
Sam rubbed the back of his neck while Ed bounced on the heels. He waited for Ed to talk, but Ed looked around at the faeries flying around and didn’t look over at him. It was rare to see Ed so quiet, then again Sam felt talkative for once. Sam stepped closer to Ed who looked up at him with a sheepish smile. He cleared his throat as he stopped bouncing and took his hands out of his pockets.
“So, um, Emma sent you those books, right?”
“She did.”
“You read them, right?”
“I did.”
“I did too. You know, I didn’t think that Ice Demons had so many emotions because they like the winter time and normally winter is associated with coldness, silence, and other somber things so I was so surprised when she told me how Ice Demons can be pretty passionate since…”
Sam gave him a small smile as he bumped his hand. If he didn’t stop Ed he would ramble on for a while, until he got to his point. “Ed, what did you want to talk about?”
Ed stopped talking and dug the toe of his sneaker into the grass below. He reached over and took Sam’s hand. Sam swallowed as looked over at Ed who continued to look down at his shoes. Ed lightly squeezed his hand before he finally looked up at him.
Sam swallowed from the serious look in Ed’s eyes. He’s been under Ed’s gaze before, though this time it felt like there were only him and Ed. He didn’t expect it to feel so nice or that it would make his heart beat out of his chest. Maybe the things that his sisters talked about weren’t fluff like he thought.
“Ed?”
“Us, I wanted to talk about us. When I read those books it put a lot of things in perspective for me.”
Sam squeezed his hand back as he nodded. “Me too.”
“I mean I thought that you would get someone around this time because you’re really c-cool and I spent a lot of time convincing myself that I wouldn’t find someone as cool as you, until college or later.” Ed laughed softly as he shook his head.
“So, I spent a lot of time thinking about how I would act and stuff when you picked someone. After reading those books though I know that, um, I want to be that person. You know, the one you pick, um the one that wants to be with you. I guess this is just a long way of me saying I like you Sam. I really like you as more than a friend, though I don’t want us to stop being friends, I want us to be, um together. So if you don’t mind I…”
Sam smiled as he placed his arms around Ed’s waist. “Ed, sometimes you talk way too much.” He leaned forward and pressed his lips softly against Ed’s. Ed mumbled in surprise before he placed his arms on Sam’s shoulders and kissed him back. He didn’t feel anything Earth shattering as his sisters described it, though he had to admit that kissing Ed did feel good. It felt that the nerves he had during the week disappeared while everything else clicked and fell in place. Well, he always felt like he clicked so well with Ed since they first time they met. It was something that he wanted to continue for a long time.
It wasn’t long before Ed pulled back with a blinding smile and a flushed face. “Guess that means you like me too.”
Sam laughed as he pressed his forehead against Ed’s. “Yes, I do. I like you too.”
“I’m glad I read everything correctly, then!”
Sam laughed as he shook his head. His own cheeks hurt from smiling so much, but he couldn’t help it. Ed liked him, he didn’t think he was weird or that he needed to change himself. It made him so happy he didn’t know how to describe it.
Sam pressed another kiss to the corner of his mouth before he leaned back. “We should let Emma know that everything worked out.”
“We do. I, um, should probably tell my grandma that everything worked out too.”
“Wait, your grandma knows?”
Ed nodded. “She told me that she saw it coming a mile away, but didn’t know why I didn’t see it.”
Sam chuckled. “Rosa and my sisters told me the same thing. Oh, they say hi by the way.”
Ed grinned. “I’ll probably have some time to see them today.”
“Be prepared for teasing,”
“I’ll be ready!”
Sam smiled as he stepped close to Ed again. “At least I won’t have to face that alone.”
Ed shook his head as he pulled Sam closer. “Of course not, Sammy…” He trailed off before he kissed Sam. Sam closed his eyes as he kissed him back and played with the end of Ed’s beanie while Ed rubbed his back.
It wouldn’t be as easy when others found out about their relationship, but it’s something that Sam wouldn’t have to face alone. He had his friends, his family, and Ed. Knowing that Ed would be by his side made things easier.
It always did.
