Note: Straight up fluff for Karen/Kevin. The first of five Valentine's Day prompts. Constructive criticism is welcome, either through comments or PM.

“Has he asked you to marry him yet?”

“Mom. Stop. No.” Karen glanced at Kevin’s oblivious back, currently turned toward her while he fiddled with something in the kitchen. She pressed the phone closer to her ear, just in case he could hear her mom’s voice over the scratchy line. “I can’t really talk about this right now.”

“Is he there now?”

“Yes.” Of course he was there. They lived together. Karen wasn’t sure if her mother had come to terms with this fact yet. Or maybe that was why she was pushing so hard for marriage.

“Maybe you should ask him,” said her mom. “I hear all the modern young women are doing it these days, not that I envy them. I’ll take a traditional proposal any day of the week.”

“Thanks for the advice, Mom, but I really have to go.” Because Kevin was turning toward her, and in his hands was...oh god, was that German chocolate?

“Give him my love,” said her mom, and then that was her thankfully off the phone. Karen hung it up and focused on more important things. Which was indeed a small German chocolate cake, held out like an offering by her gorgeous boyfriend.

“I wondered what was in that mysterious box,” she said, sidling up to him and using one finger to scoop up some icing before he tsked and held it out of her reach.

“After the terrible week you had, I figured you needed something to make up for it,” said Kevin, setting the cake down on the table and handing her a knife. “And, well, I was going to be super romantic and bake it myself, but I wanted it to be edible, so Edna’s Bakery it was.” He shrugged.

“It’s perfect,” said Karen, cutting the cake into not-quite-equal halves and taking the bigger piece for herself. And with that first bite, rich chocolate melting against her tongue so sweetly she almost moaned, she thought maybe her mom was right. Maybe Kevin did need to get around to proposing to her sooner rather than later.

Or maybe she would do it herself. What were the chances she’d find another guy who so perfectly knew exactly how to cheer her up after a stressful week?

“And afterward,” he said, leaning over and whispering into her ear, “there’s a Fred Astaire film playing downtown.”

Karen grinned loopily at him and wondered how much an engagement ring cost.

Something to research, for some other day. Right now all that mattered was German chocolate, and Kevin’s hand resting against her hip.

That cake. You made me long for it and I don't even like German chocolate.

But, the timing in this is at once perfectly timed and very natural, besides all of the squee it brought me. Thank you!
