The one good thing about moving to Virginia was the winter.

Irvine didn't have much to offer in the way of seasons. The temperature varied, and that not even very much; perhaps twenty or thirty degrees the entire year, thanks to the perpetually sunny skies and the nearby ocean.

But in Virginia it snowed. In Virginia it got so cold nobody teased Deborah for wearing hijab when it kept her ears warm. In Virginia she and her sisters could play outside, building snowmen eight feet high.

In Virginia Deborah could see the beauty of the cold. It was almost comforting.
