“I can’t believe his audacity,” Helene Pertrand Ortiz said to her mistress, Queen Elisabeta or better known to her since childhood as Betha.

Elisabeth sighed. She rocked the cherry wood cradle holding her tiny daughter as she listened to her oldest friend rant.

Elisabeth and Helene were in the nursery with their children. Helene was watching over baby Antonio. The little boy was asleep, but Elisabeth thought that with as loud as his mother was, there was a very real possibility that he would wake.

“I know Lenie but you just have to ignore him,” Elisabeth said patting baby Maria on the back. The baby gave a small burp and cooed at her mother.

Helene shook her wild mass of red curls and pouted.

“It is very hard to ignore him when he’s flaunting her around court, that jezebel!”

Elisabeth looked up and gave her friend a stern look.

“I won’t have you talking about Benedita like that Lenie,” Elisabeth started, “And besides you shouldn’t blame her. Advisor Ortiz is a grown man, he should have better tact.”

Helene frowned. “Why do you always take up for Benedita? She’s a grown woman as well. She shouldn’t be sleeping with a married man.”

“I’m not taking up for her. But Benedita is my friend too. I would take up for you if you were in her position.”

Helene snorted loudly, but didn’t say anything else.

“Have you gotten any more letters from Fernando?” Helene asked.

Elisabeth smiled slightly and shook her head.

“He’s at war and I suppose the battlefield isn’t the place where one can frequently write.”

“You’re right of course,” Helene agreed.

“But I did get a letter from Emeri,” Elisabeth continued.

Helene clapped her hands delightedly. “I cannot believe little Emeri is King of all Monde now. What did he say?”

Elisabeth tapped her hands against her thighs as she began to recall the contents of the letter.

“Emeri is angry because Marie married without his permission.”

“Oh?”

“Yes she finally married her chevalier…” Elisabeth trailed off.

The nursery was silent for a few tense moments. Helene was afraid to break the silence. Elisabeth hadn’t mentioned Sieur Jehann in over six years.

“How do you feel about that, Betha?” Helene asked quietly.

Elisabeth opened her mouth uncertainly before closing it again. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath before continuing.

“I’m happy for them. After all I only had a silly crush on him.”

“But you swore you would never forgive Marie,” Helene whispered.

Elisabeth smiled. “I was fifteen though Lenie. A lot has changed since then.”

“Like you’ve fallen for your dashing husband?” Helene asked with a sly smile.

Elisabeth burst out laughing which startled both babies. Elisabeth bent over Maria’s crib and started to sing a Mondian lullaby to her. It made her immensely proud that her Albabian princess could only be soothed by Mondian lullabies.

Helene picked up baby Antonio and placed him against her shoulder and rubbed his back. After both babies had quieted down, Elisabeth and Helene renewed their talk.

“It seems strange that Fernando is the one I now love,” Elisabeth said.

“Not so strange, he is your husband after all.”

“Yes, but when I came here and met him the last thing I thought I would feel for him was love,” Elisabeth said reminiscing on the first time she had met Fernando. He had seemed so much older than her and to top it off, a womanizer. Oh how things had changed.

“Fernando is a good person and he’s easy to fall in love with, unlike my bastard of a husband,” Helene spat out.

“Helene!” Elisabeth admonished.

“Well it’s true Betha. You have the perfect husband. He’s devoted to you. I would love to switch places with you.”

Elisabeth smiled sadly.

“At least Ortiz is here to share in the joy of a new baby with you.”

Helene looked down at the sleeping baby in her arms. She smiled at him.

“I didn’t think of that Betha,” she said.

Elisabeth looked over at baby Maria and thought silently to herself.

Please bring him back to us.

Awww, that ending, that's nicely bittersweet and sad. I do hope Elisabeth gets her husband back, and I like the bits of backstory.

I'm a sucker for stories where two people end up falling in love after an inauspicious start. :) I like Elisabeth a lot; she seems to have a good head on her shoulders.
