Hever was the first, during training hikes in the middle of the forest, far from the prying eyes of their instructors and fellow students. His fingers trembled as he pulled her shirt away, and they fumbled together beneath the trees, the setting sun dappling golden against his back. Jay had heard so many stories about how much it would hurt, but when he first entered her it was almost nothing. She'd suffered far worse hurts in her training, and though she wouldn't call that first time pleasurable, it was far from intolerable.

There was something slightly disappointing about that.

#

Her first assignment was to meet a Seenian ambassador whom rumor had it was a former lover of the empress and the father of the heir to the throne. All Jay knew was that she had been ordered to treat him as royalty, which meant Sun Guard.

Her counterpart was older, a man called Tep who was already going gray and who taught her, one day when they were bored during the ride and frustrated with so many days of close quarters, that it was possible to maneuver well enough in the dark carriage to get the job done.

#

There was no love between her and Gavin, just an arrangement borne of the isolation that came from being the empress's personal guard. They shared quarters, and food, and company when weren't with the empress, and it only made sense they shared beds and comfort, too. He smuggled a pastry to her on her birthday, though they were forbidden to indulge while on assignment. She let him go first when they had their bath, because he liked the hot water. And when he was given a new assignment, everything seemed a little colder.

Maybe there was some love there.

#

She wasn't stupid; she knew Atro felt fondly toward her, more fondly than a married man should. And she understood, not because she was vain, but because the match with Hopina was just politics, and Hopina herself wasn't someone who could satisfy Atro's adventurous spirit. This Jay saw from the shadows, but she never gave him reason to pursue her, took care to never give him hope in that direction, not even unintentionally.

There really was no love from her to him, at least not that kind, and encouraging his love toward her could damage so much.

#

If asked, she would have said that she didn't love Merrus, nor he her, but that their coupling was entirely from curiosity. And she might have believed it herself for years, even through their time together, even after the baby he gave her, even when he came back for the family he had left behind.

Once they had settled, though, built their little house on the coast and made their lives together in a way that seemed it would be like that for a long time if not forever, even Jay had to admit perhaps there was something there.

#

She wouldn't have given any of them up, none of those times. But none of them were her. None of them had ever given Jay that feeling she'd had seeing her splayed across the sheets, black hair spread into a fan, smooth back arching in pleasure while Jay attended to her.

Jay didn't believe in true loves, but if there had been such a thing she thought maybe it would have been her, the empress, and that short time they had together was the happiest of her life, all the sweeter for it never coming again.

Aww, that ending. That's pretty damn heartbreaking. I love how Jay retains some affection for all of them.

Ahh, poor Jay. I kept thinking "she really seems like she's holding herself back from things that could be wonderful," and then I saw why.
