The origin of the crest of the Amber Isles is a question with a long history. The image of a whale with a city growing out of it, an ocean circling around the rim, may easily be seen as figurative, but engravings of similar images in thick stone have been found which predate settlement of the Isles. Whether evidence of a lost city of the Undines or an elaborate hoax played by the Isles' founders, the inhabitants don't mind: poets flock to the Isles every year to enter traditional tall-tale contests, with no prize for proof.
