Amy stepped from the car, miles and miles from her destination, and breathed in the sea.

After about five minutes, James leaned hard on the horn, blasting it over the waves and the seagulls, but Amy just smiled and closed her eyes and took another breath.

Far off in the distance, she could see a girl playing in the surf while unruly hair ribbons trailed behind her, and suddenly she was transported back eight years, until she was the girl and the water curled around her ankles and her feet sunk into the sand, and the hot sun held her in its warm embrace.

Cassie yelled something, James hit the horn again; Amy only heard the crash of the waves.

She itched to be that girl again, eleven years old and without a care in the world, to do over the last eight years, only this time properly, in the place she had always meant to be.

They had to drag her back to the car, James no longer eight years old but towering over her in teenage male scowling, taking her arm, Cassie stomping at his side, sulking and crying about how it was too hot, the unappreciative brat.

“You're a freak,” said James as he took the driver's seat, shiny new license less than a month old but Amy was clearly in no condition to do it.

“Don't stop again, I hate it here,” said Cassie, her voice pitched shrill.

Amy looked at the sea, at the girl playing and playing, the ribbons twisting in the wind, and wished she could join her.

Love the imagery here, and I really get that sense of Amy's disconnect as they bundle her back in the car.

Poor Amy. Maybe she can live by the sea when she gets older.
