Every muscle in Peace's body felt sore and loose, sweaty, sticky, and covered in sand. At some point he had acquired a light blanket and what he thought was a pillow until he realized it was warm and covered in long hair. The skin on his face and right arm felt tight with sunburn. He opened his eyes.

He was lying sprawled over Dmitry's back, his face buried between the other man's neck and shoulders; Dmitry was face-down on his stomach, breathing evenly in sleep. Peace's stomach tried and failed to tighten against the wave of calm he still felt. Well. If things got awkward, there'd be time to deal with that.

The tide had receded completely, and the beach was scattered with trash and dead fish. He heard people off in the distance, over the boardwalks and downed trees between him and the remains of the monsters; a pungent, meaty smell of charcoal smoke seemed to be coming from the same direction. Stomach growling, Peace disentangled himself from Dmitry and the blanket and looked around for his shirt. About half of it lay in a puddle of seawater and blood, which just reminded him of the itchy, stinging wounds still healing over most of his body.

He was getting too used to waking up in strange places.

Peace gave his shirt up for gone, tugged his shoes off, fixed his jeans, and headed towards the smell of smoke.

Bonfires rimmed the beach. Some were burning the hundreds of demon bodies scattered around, while others closer to the giant metal monster seemed to be for the hell of it. A lot of people he didn't recognize were running around, cleaning up, talking on cell phones, many of them in suits or police uniforms, local and otherwise. The much smaller group that had been in the last battle were all in a lump next to a pit fire and grill. The grill smelled like burgers. It turned his stomach a bit, but it was free.

Kevin saw him first, but Diana followed his eyes, raising a can of Coke in his direction. "Hey! Get over here, we saved you a seat!" She looked a lot better than she had that morning, though her right arm and side were heavily bandaged. On the other hand, she looked like she'd gotten a shower and a new set of clothes.

A small cheer rose up from the crowd as he went to sit down.

Awww, Peace. He seems kind of at sea but at least okay with it for now.
