Coming back to consciousness was a cold-water feeling along her back. Fuzziness; pain-meds fuzziness.

Diana opened her eyes and tried to sit up, stinging with light. Artifical light. Dizzy. Hand on her back.

"Whoa there."

She recognized Lance's voice, then his face, then the fact she'd nearly fell over.

"Wha' happen?" her question became.

"We won."

A long, deep sigh flooded out of her. "Hallelujah."

*

Two broken ribs. Clavicle. Humerus, multiple times. Her forearm was a collection of tiny splinters, nevermind her hand.

We had options, the doctor had said. Lose the arm, or taint. She'd been too unconscious to make the decision. She suspected she knew who made it for her.

The next few hours were filled with phone calls. Cleanup. Backup. De-evac. She wasn't good for much else, but it was all right.

No victory drinks with the pain meds, though, no matter how sad-puppy she looked.

*

As the sun set, she sat out on the beach getting tanned, "supervising" the evidence removal crews. They had burgers.

Five dead, two of them mortal, not counting civilians. Not counting everything else.

But today, she was alive.

Pretty much all you can celebrate in the midst of war, I suppose; being alive.
