Mel sat on the roof of his snug, sturdy little house, pondering the letter he’d gotten from the Lady that morning. It was sort of odd, her formally requesting that he serve as official envoy of the Islands to the peace talks soon to be held in Asendar. True, he had rank, and he’d helped settle feuds before (though the first and most memorable was entirely by accident), but one would think she’d choose someone from her own Clan. Or, if not, someone with a more…well, forceful personality. Someone like Vor.

He smiled a little, thinking of his beloved—that had been quite the coup, and their relationship settled the feud between their Clans. He’d still been sailing then, and had been held hostage, and things had gotten far friendlier than they should have. Vor had returned him, safe and with no ransom other than the promise of future love.

They hadn’t formally married, because neither wanted to leave their Clan—Mel being the last straight descendant of his line and Vor having enough of a base and reputation to not want to start all over again—but they’d stayed together like this for over ten years. It was enough for them, and that was all that really mattered.

Mel had retired after Vor returned him, and served as his Clan Head’s aide. Maybe that was why the Lady wanted him so badly. He had political experience, of a sort, but, unlike any of the Heads, could tear himself away for however long this would take.

He closed his eyes and breathed in the fresh-blooming flowers around him. It would be nice, to travel again. He liked his quiet life for the most part, but sometimes he did miss it. And it would be all for a good cause, not just a pleasure-cruise.

The more he thought about it—barring a serious objection from his lover, of course—the more he thought he’d agree. He rather liked peace, and the more he could help spread it, the happier everyone would be.

He opened his eyes again and watched the horizon, the sun setting at his back, and waited for a glimpse of Vor’s sails. Soon, with any luck, they’d be together and off again, to settle someone else’s feud.

It would be magical.
