Note: Constructive criticism is welcome, either through comments or PM.
“Look at it, Vicki,” said Robert, taking his wife by her shoulders and steering her toward a specific spot on the beach. “Isn’t it beautiful?”
Vicki sighed the sigh of one who knows exactly where the conversation is heading. “Yes, Rob, I’ve told you before that it’s a lovely view. But that doesn’t mean--”
“Imagine it cleaned up,” said Robert. “We’ll get rid of the rocks, clean up the sand, maybe put some decorative palm trees up to line the edges. It’ll be just as good as anything they’ve got down south.”
“Rob, we don’t have the money!”
“And the resort itself,” he continued, swiveling her so that she faced back inland. “I’ll put it right there, clear out the trees so that there’s an unobstructed view of the ocean. People pay a lot for ocean views.” He pointed.
“You’re going to put it where your mother’s house is?” Vicki crossed her arms. She and her mother-in-law didn’t see eye-to-eye on most things, but she thought they might agree on this.
“It’s the perfect place.”
“I think she’ll have something to say about that, and it won’t be good.” Personally, Vicki thought Rob’s mother was a crazy old bat, driven mad by her refusal to leave her isolated house, cut off from everyone after her husband died, save Robert’s sporadic visits.
Visits that were getting much more frequent since he’d come up with this cockamamie plan to open a resort.
“She’s already given the house to me,” said Robert. “I can do with it what I want.”
Vicki may have thought Rob’s mother insane, but it was still wrong to disrespect one’s parent like that. “You’d just throw her out on the street?”
He looked shocked. “Of course not! She could come live with us.”
It was all of Vicki’s worst nightmares, coming true. “Robert, no,” she said. “I don’t want her living with us, and I don’t want you spending money on some hare-brained scheme. Not with the baby on the way.” Her hand strayed to her stomach.
“I’m doing this for you and the baby,” said Robert. “If I’m successful, you’ll never have to work again.”
Vicki didn’t have a fancy business degree like her husband, but she’d been working for businessmen all her life, and she knew the average success rate. They were not odds she was willing to gamble with their home and their livelihood.
“Smile,” said Robert, tipping her chin up so that she was looking him in the eyes. “This will work. You’ll see.”
Vicki gave him a wan smile, all the while wondering how she was ever going to talk him out of this foolishness.
