Summary: Three days in the desert. Kara and Sophie continue their journey from this fic. For the record, the song at the end is A Horse With No Name.
Comments, criticism, and questions are all appreciated.
The first evening, they barely spoke, except about the dog. Sophie was wary, clearly uninterested in talking about herself, while Kara, now that she had food and companionship and a sliver of hope, spent most of the night recovering from the shock. Ichi was a safe topic. Sophie said he was an Akita Inu, purebred, but without papers. She sounded proud when she talked about him.
Sophie said they should head out before the sun rose, and woke her up around 3 AM with bags of salvage. They shared another bottle of water and walked in silence.
*
The first day, they had breakfast at dawn in the half-shade of an old wooden fence. Then they kept going. There were buildings in the distance every so often, but none looked inhabited, and sometime in the night, her phone had run out of charge.
"So where's the nearest town?" she asked sometime around 9, beginning to worry about the lack of cars.
"I'm not sure," Sophie replied, "but if we keep going north on the interstate, we'll be fine."
Kara frowned; Sophie wasn't putting her at ease- or trying to- but what could she do?
*
The second evening, they walked until Kara simply couldn't anymore. They found a tree to sit under; Kara spritzed a few drops of water into her hair, and they fed most of the remaining jerky to Ichi, who promptly took a nap.
"He seems to eat a lot," Kara remarked.
"More than me," was all Sophie said in response.
Later, Sophie walked off on her own. Kara worried for a moment she'd get left behind, but she told Ichi to stay. She came back at dusk with a plastic grocery bag full of something Kara didn't get to see.
*
The second morning, Sophie laughed.
Kara was startled out of a daydream when she heard it. "What?"
"You were humming."
"Oh. Sorry."
There was an awkward silence before Sophie spoke. "I don't mind. Singing might help pass time, don't you think?"
"Maybe..." Kara looked down; truth be told, she was intimidated by the strange girl. "I don't know what I was humming, but I don't mind if you want to sing."
"Ah, no. I don't... listen to music much. All the songs I know are old and silly."
"I don't mind," Kara replied, but nothing came of it.
*
The third evening, it was cold, and Sophie taught her how to make a fire out of scraps.
"When it blows out, Ichi's warm. We'll be fine 'til morning."
Kara just nodded. It had been three days since she'd seen her Dad, her bedroom, her laptop, or a person other than Sophie, and she was beginning to wonder if she was really awake, or even alive.
"I think there's a town a few miles up the road," Sophie said then. "We should reach it by lunchtime. You can charge your phone there."
Kara sat up straight, her stomach fluttering nervously.
*
Kara could barely sleep that night. She needed her jacket as a blanket, so she didn't have a pillow, for one.
It was a long night.
Sometime after the moon rose, Sophie started singing to herself.
It was almost a whisper, and she had a slight accent when she sang.
"On the first part of the journey, I was looking at all the life... there were plants and birds and rocks and things, there was sand and hills and rings..."
Kara's stomach started fluttering again, but not in nervousness. She hugged herself and tried not to think about it.

Yeah, I'm having fun writing how slowly they're beginning to realize the other's not going to kill them.
