Jax was sitting at the kitchen table with a sketchpad and some colored pencils when he heard Noah’s familiar heavy footsteps start up the back porch. Noah entered the kitchen and headed for Jax in long, sure strides and without a word, tugged Jax out of his chair and against him. Noah kissed him soundly before he could question anything.

Noah’s eyes were bright with victory when they parted, Jax gasping. “I got a deer,” he said in explanation. “Feel like goin’ into town tonight?”

He smiled. “Yes.” They had been on a few dates so far, but it was mostly them driving around and talking. They had yet to actually go somewhere. Jax had never complained about it, or thought to, but it would still be a nice change.

After Noah went back out to take care of his kill, Jax went to find his mama. She was in her sewing room, looking through her fabric scraps, and he knocked on the door frame to let her know he was there.

“Come in,” June said, without looking up.

“What are you doin’, Mama?” he asked, walking in and leaning down to kiss her on the cheek.

“Oh, just putting things together for another quilt. Idle hands and all that.” She smiled up at him. “What can I do for you, son?”

“Noah’s back. He brought a deer.”

“The Lord provides,” June smiled. “And it helps that Noah is a good hunter.”

“Yes ma’am. He’s outside dressing it right now.” Jax blushed a bit, hesitating. “He wants to take me into town tonight to celebrate.”

There was a small moment of silence where June frowned. Not about their date, because Jax knew his mother loved Noah like another son, but he knew why she was. “Are you sure that’s safe?” she eventually asked.

No matter what year it was, they were still in southern Georgia.

“I’ll be with Noah,” was all he said, and that seemed to be enough.

Her worry stayed with Jax as he was getting ready, and he considered not wearing make-up. But he knew Noah liked the make-up, and that swayed him into putting at least eye make-up on. The way Noah stared at him when Jax walked downstairs to meet him made the risk worth it.

“Where are we goin’?” Jax asked, when they were outside and Noah had opened the truck door for him.

Noah blushed, shrugging slightly. “Town? I don’t really… You don’t seem like the bar type.”

“I could be the bar type,” he teased as he climbed in.

Noah shut the door behind Jax, and answered when he climbed in on his side. “You sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure.” Jax smiled. “I want to show you off.”

Noah blushed but gave him a small smile that Jax thought was maybe only for him. “Alright. We’ll go to the bar.”

It went fine. Really, it did. For a while. Noah even called Jax his date, his blue eyes steely and daring anyone to say anything. Nobody did at that point. But later someone called him a queer bitch, and Jax’s happiness evaporated.

Noah was gone from his side in a flash, and punched the guy in the face hard enough to send him to his knees. Noah grabbed the front of his shirt to pull him back up and punch him a second and third time, until there was a clatter of teeth against the bar room floor. The bar was silent except for the jukebox and nearly everyone was staring.

Jax stared too, wide eyed.

Noah didn’t let the guy go. “If I ever find out you so much as lay eyes on my boyfriend again, much less talk to him, I will dress and skin you like a fuckin’ deer.” His voice was a dangerous growl that Jax had never heard from anyone before. Noah let go and let him drop to the floor before he stalked back over to Jax, and Jax thought that he was going to kiss him.

He couldn’t say he wasn’t disappointed when Noah only grabbed his hand to lead him outside. Still, he smiled stupidly. Noah had called him his boyfriend.
