“Fire!”

She turns towards the cry. A strange twinkling in her eyes. It’s finally happening.

In awe she sees how the stone flies through the air when the catapult releases it. Yet when the stone hits the wall of the castle, she flinches. It hurts a little. Despite knowing that what she’s doing is right, it still hurts. After all, it has been her home for all those years. She has hated it, but it was home.

A deep intake of breath before she walks over to one of the man near the catapult.

“Why aren’t they answering?”

He shakes his head. But smiles when he looks at her.

“I don’t know. But I guess it must mean we’re winning princess.”

For a second her eyes narrow. But then she closes them. Can’t let him see her anger and the pain.

“Don’t call me that.”

She can see it in the look on his face. Wondering how else he should call her.

It makes her shake her head lightly. Wondering why no one but her secret lover dares calling her something else. Honestly, she has a name…

-

“Fire!”

The shout makes her put her hands over her ears and close her eyes. Quickly she turns around, putting her back to the shout, and crouching down – making herself as small as possible.

She expects a lot of sounds. Gunshots, canon shots, anything that makes a lot of noise.
But the only thing she hears is the rattling of chains and the creaking of wood and then a ‘swoosh’. As if something is thrown through the air. And a couple of seconds later the sound of stone against stone. And something that starts crumbling.

Surprised she turns her head a little, peeking towards the sounds. Eyes open wide when she sees the catapult standing there. Disbelieve is written all over her face when she stands up again. As in a daze she walks towards the huge weapon. Sees how another stone is rolled into the sling.

Her hands are trembling when she takes a hold of her kimono. Running towards one of the man at the catapult.

“What is going on?”

She sees the surprised look on his face when he hears that he’s being addressed by a girl.

“Get out of here.”

Her eyes narrow and she sees how his eyes widen when he recognises her despite the worn-out kimono.

“Princess…?”

A silent whisper. It confuses her. Where the hell is she?

-

“Fire!”

Surprised she looks behind her when she hears the battle cry. Seeing how Nick is holding his self-made catapult, aiming at her.

“What are you doing?”

He laughs cheerfully when he releases the little ball of paper. Shaking her head, a smile on her face, Freya simply steps aside, letting the paper fly right next to her.

“Oh.”

She giggles when she sees the pouting look on her lover’s face. Sees how he walks over to her, until he’s standing right next to her. Side by side.

“Where did you find that one?”

He smiles when he wraps an arm around her waist. “In one of the boxes in the basement we still have to unpack one day. It was one of my favourite toys when I was little. Oh, I’ve seen your self-made wooden bow and arrows down there as well.”

Her eyes widen a little, happy, when she hears those words. “I didn’t know we took them with us when we moved.”

The look on his face tells her he did, without her knowing.

Biting her lip she leans closer towards him, kissing his cheek gently. “Thanks.”

He shakes his head in response, before reloading his catapult.

“Fire!”

Yelping she jumps away but can’t prevent getting hit on the shoulder. Laughing she chases him around the garden, trying to ignore the sense of a long-forgotten dream.
