6. dinner and a movie

Freya smiles when she sees Nick struggle a little with his chopsticks.

"Oh, don't laugh. I'm not used to eating like this."

She shakes her head. "I wasn't laughing. It's kinda cute to see you trying to use it correctly."

He pulls up his eyebrows. The look of non-believing on his face results in Freya laughing. And he nods his head, looking at her as if he's proven his point.

"That's not fair!"

Shaking her head in mock hurt, but she keeps on giggling despite her words. Still she sets herself a little closer, taking his hand in hers and adjusting his grip. "There, that should make it easier."

"Thanks. So, any preference for the movie?"

The question makes Freya pull up her shoulders. "No, not really, as long as it's no horror."

Closing her eyes she takes a sip of her green tea. She loves this restaurant.

"Okay. No horror. Fantasy? Or thriller?"

There's a mischievous twinkle in her eyes when she looks back at him. "Romance?"

She means every bit how it sounds, flirty, but she knows he won't react to it.

"It depends. What are they playing?"

She shakes her head. "Not a clue. We'll see when we've finished eating?"

"Yeah, okay. Though I'm really in the mood for Fantasy or Science-Fiction. If that is okay by you..."

Smiling she nods. "You know well enough I love those movies."

He winks and Freya turns her attention back to her food. Missing the look in Nick's eyes.

12. walking in step

"Oh wow."

Freya blinks when she leaves the gym. Her training's bag slung over her shoulder. Closing her eyes she directs her face towards the sun, enjoying the warmth spreading through her body.

"The weather is gorgeous."

She smiles when she hears Nick chuckle beside her. Doesn't open her eyes just yet.

"Any plans this afternoon?"

Nick shakes his head, realizing too late she can't see it with her eyes closed. "No, not really."

"Want to take a walk through town?"

She turns to look at him, questioningly, when she doesn't get an answer. A surprised look on her face when she sees how he's watching her.

"Yeah, I'd love to."

She smiles, ignoring the strange tingle in her belly.

Linking her arm with his, she starts walking, almost dragging him with her. It makes his laugh and the sound is enough to make the strange - almost worried - feeling disappear.

She walks a little faster than usual, Nick a little slower. Adapting their steps to one other.

"So, any specific place you want to go to?"

Freya shakes her head. "Not really. I just wanted to walk, enjoy the gorgeous weather."

"And enjoy your company. I just want to be with you a little longer." But she doesn't voice that thought.

"How about the park? I'm pretty sure the ice-vender will be there with this, indeed gorgeous, weather."

Freya's eyes are sparking when she agrees. And once again she misses the look in his eyes when he looks at her.

1. soft kisses

She never minded to get to work. Never. Not really. She actually kinda really liked her job. But now. Now the smile disappears as soon as she walks inside the building. Now she hardly speaks, unless it is absolutely necessary: when there are clients on the phone or sitting before her. Now, it gets harder every day to get out of bed in the morning.

She takes a deep breath when she walks out of the office again. The sun is still shining, but is starting to set already. It was a gorgeous day. And she was stuck inside, trying to deal with it...

"Freya..."

Surprised she looks aside when she hears Nick's voice. Wonders why there is such a worried look on his face.

"Are you alright?"

He's standing in front of her in two steps, putting a hand on her shoulder. His other hand moving up to caress her cheek, his thumb brushing away a lonely tear...

She nods, before closing her eyes and shaking her head. "No, but it doesn't matter. It's almost over now, so..."

Smiling she reaches out to hug him.

"So, what brings you to town?"

Shaking his head he tightens his hold on her. "What's the matter?"

"Nothing special. Really. It's over already."

She smiles when she lets go of him. And he can see the usual happy spark in her eyes again. Not clouded anymore, like a couple of seconds before.

"Want to go for a walk? Or a movie? Or dinner? Or a drink?"

Nick nods and she beamingly takes his arm in hers. He stops her before she can start walking though. She turns a questioning gaze at him. A soft intake of breath when he steps closer, cupping her cheek, before placing a gentle kiss on her lips.

Freya's eyes widen when he pulls back.

"Nick..."

Surprise. Shock. And the beginning of a small and happy smile on her face.

"I think I'm falling for you..."

She bites the inside of her lips when she hears the whisper. And closes her eyes when she feels his lips on hers again. The softest of moans when she brings her hands up, letting her fingers lightly tangle in his hair, when she kisses him back.

2. first date

Beep Beep

She looks at her cell phone. Nick. Just seeing his name appear on the little screen makes her heart flutter in her chest. She has loved him for quite some time already. And now... Now...

Biting her lip she recalls yesterday. How he kissed her right in front of her work. How he kissed her...

A soft sigh escapes her and she feels a blush coming up, before she finally opens the text message.

"Hey. Want to go out for dinner this evening?"

She smiles and starts typing back. Ignoring the strange look her colleague is shooting her.

"Are you asking me out on a date? ^^"

Grinning she presses send. It feels a bit weird. After all, they regularly went out together, for dinner or a movie or a drink, before.

"Freya? Are you alright?"

She smiles. The first time in weeks that she smiles at work. It surprises her colleagues.

"Yeah. Sure. Why not?"

She didn't mean it as a question and they don't react to it. They are just happy to see her smile again.

Beep Beep

She's tempted to ignore the phone that is ringing on her desk and instead immediately check the message. But that would be rude towards the client calling her and her boss would not appreciate it.

Luckily the phone call doesn't last longer than five minutes and she almost laughs out loud when she read his answer.

"I've asked you on a date so many times before. :p As in like, every time we agreed on meeting up? :p But yeah, you have a point. I am calling you out on a date... A real one. An official one? =$ x"

For a second she wonders why he puts a blushing smiley at the end.

"Are you nervous? x"

It's only when she sends the question that she notices her hands are a little clammy. They're even shaking a little bit. And the butterflies are roaming through her belly. She's nervous herself...Quickly she sends another message.

"I'd love to go out for dinner this evening. Uhm... Can you pick me up at work? ^^"

The rest of the day she is cheerful and almost whistling. The last message made sure that nothing could break her happy mood.

"I'm looking very much forward to this. To us. =$ And... I like you. Very much. =$ *kiss*"

5. hand in hand

She all but runs to him when she sees him standing outside of her work. Flinging her arms around his neck and pressing her body against his.

"Hey."

A surprised laugh escapes him when he returns the spontaneous hug.

It takes a couple of seconds before she lets go. Smiles brightly before kissing him, passionately.

"I missed you."

The comment makes Nick shake his head lightly. The smile doesn't leave his lips though. "You've seen me last night."

He doesn't wait for her to reply. "But yeah, I missed you too." A soft whisper against her lips.

Winking at her, he takes her hand in his own, and they start walking. For a second she hugs his arm, lets her head rest on his shoulder. Giggles when he kisses the top of her head. Before she straightens up again. Squeezing his hand lightly. It earns her a squeeze back. And a questioning look.

She just shrugs, blows him a kiss, before replying. "I like this."

Another questioning look. And she brings their linked hands up a little.

"I like this."

Smiling Nick stops walking, pulling her in his arms and kissing her.

"I like this very much. And I love you."

Freya blushes and smiles against his mouth, wrapping her arms around his waist as if she's never going to let go of him.

7. sweet nothings

She sets herself in the bathtub. Sighing softly when she feels how the warm water slowly starts to relax her muscles. Finally... The pain in her back has nearly been unbearable today. And her left shoulder... She doesn't know what's wrong with that - perhaps a poor posture while she was sleeping. She doesn't know. Doesn't really care either. All she cares about now is that the pain is finally leaving her body. That her muscles are finally losing some of the tension. And that...

"Freya?"

She opens her eyes when she hears him call out for her.

"I'm taking a bath."

Smiles when she sees him walk through the door. Carefully he sets himself on the rim of the bathtub. Letting his fingers caress her cheek before he leans in to kiss her. His hand moving to the back of her head when he deepens the kiss.

Slowly she brings up her own hands, unbuttoning his shirt.

"Join me?"

The water is still warm and Nick doesn't need to be asked twice. Within seconds he's undressed and Freya moves to the other end of the tub. Letting Nick take her place and when he sits comfortable, she moves again until she's leaning against him. Her back against his chest and immediately he wraps his arms around her shoulders, holding her close to him.

11. sleeping together

She wakes early. Blinking against the morning light that falls through the curtains. Pushing herself up a little to look at the clock on her bedside table. 06:21. Sighing she lays herself back down on the mattress. Already knowing sleep won't come anymore. Looking aside she sees the peaceful sleeping form of Nick beside her. His long brown hair sprawled over the cushion. His naked back towards her. And it takes some willpower not to reach out and touch him. To let her fingertips grace his skin and to place kisses all over him. To wrap her arm around him and slowly, carefully, start playing with a nipple. Gently stroking it at first and then gently rolling it between two fingers. She can already imagine the sounds he would make. Soft moans, perhaps a little bit longingly.

She smiles at the thought. Perhaps she should wake him up like that at a more decent Sunday morning hour.

She nods to herself and inches just a little closer. Content for now to just watch him sleep. To hear his calm and steady breathing. And to know that he is hers now. Know that she can press her body against his and that he'll hold her and kiss her and caress her. Know that she'll wake up like this every morning from now on. With him lying next to her.

She watches how he turns himself on his back. His face towards her. And this time she does reach out. Can't help it. Her fingers brush a lock of hair out of his face, before they softly trace unknown patterns over his face, throat, neck and chest. A light touch. Not enough to wake him. But enough to make him slightly react to it. She smiles when he turns on his side, inching closer towards her and wrapping an arm around her.

Freya smiles. It's usually a sign he's slowly waking up. Slowly she brings her hand up again, lying the palm flat against his chest, there where his heart beats.

9. hearing your heartbeat

Training ends with a final 'Mate. Yame Mate.' and Freya can't suppress a small sigh of relieve. Her eyes closed for a second, before she lines up together with the others. She doesn't react when Nick passes her and tickles her sides. Ignores his surprised look at the lack of reaction.

"Re."

They bow and she walks away immediately after. Not looking back to see if Nick is following. Not wanting to see the looks on the faces of the others.

She bows when she steps off the tatami, avoiding still to look at Nick. She wants nothing more but to hide in his arms and let him kiss away all the feelings inside that are confusing her. But she'll wait until they are home.

Her steps echo in the empty hallway. No one is ever out that fast. And Nick will probably still do a little free-fight with Rob before they go to the changing room.

Sighing she sets herself down on the bench. For once not minding one bit that she was the only girl at training today. She wouldn't want anyone else to see the tears that are freely rolling down.

She can hear the boys chattering in the room next doors. Can hear sensei explain yet another idea - he never stops fighting in his head, not even when he's off the tatami or not at training.

Eventually the voices lessen, people going home, to finally stop, everybody gone. Everybody but Nick, he'd never leave without her. And she's still in her changing room. Completely dressed in her normal clothes again. Just sitting on the bench. She needs a shower. Long and hot. To ease the tension in her muscles, to make the headache go away. To clear her thoughts... And she needs a hug. And a kiss. And someone to tell her it's alright.

A soft knock on the door. She knows, of course she knows, that it is Nick.

"I'll be right there."

She takes a deep breath and walks over to the sink, splashing cold water in her face to mask the dried up tears. Another deep breath before she walks out of the door. Trying to smile reassuringly when she sees the worries look on his face.

"Come. Let's go home. I'm hungry and I'm longing for a shower. Join me?"

She speaks rapidly, to hide the quiver in her voice. And her question was a little pleading.

"Sure."

He turns and wraps an arm around her shoulder. "Are you alright?"

She shakes her head. Can't lie to him. Doesn't want to lie to him. She tries to hide, sometimes. When she knows she's being silly and ridiculous. He almost always sees through it.

"No. But it doesn't matter."

The words escape her before she notices it.

"Sorry."

She knows he doesn't like it when she minimalizes it. But it has become a reflex, a defense mechanism. Sometimes she can't help it.

"It's just... Everything together. The pain in my shoulders. I hate it that the fucking injury is there for nearly a year already and that nothing seems to help and that it doesn't go away and that nobody knows what has to be done. The fact that I just want to train again. Without limitations, without pain, without having to hold back. There's an exam coming up and I want nothing more than to participate. But sensei won’t allow me to train decently – even if I would be able to do so – and I’m tired of always having to teach the kids. I just…"

She sighs. Deeply. And shakes her head.

"And I need to lose some weight. Seriously. I don’t feel good anymore. Too chubby. And my knees are starting to hurt. Perhaps my weight is not the real reason, I don't know. But I'm sure they won't mind if I lose weight. And, I know what I have to do, stay away from sweets and cookies and crisps and chocolate. It’s all I have to do, because I know my eating patterns are good. I respect my breakfast, lunch and dinner. And all are pretty healthy. I just… I just can’t say no to these yummy little things in between."

Another shake of the head.

"I just…"

There are tears rolling down and she curses softly because of it.

"Sorry. I’m overreacting, I know."

She looks up in surprise when he places his fingers against her lips. "You are not."

Smiling sadly she turns to face him, wrapping her arms around his waist and hiding herself in his embrace. Her head against his chest. It’s reassuringly. Hearing his heartbeat while feeling his arms around her and his kiss on top of her head.

"I just want to be able to train again. Just. Train again. Get my condition back. And my speed and my power and my reflexes. Just, train again like I used to. Is that really so much to ask for?"

Careful hands rub her back. "We'll get there. You'll see. It will all come back. We'll get there."

Smiling she shakes her head against his chest. Appreciating his words more than he can possibly imagine, but she's not ready to believe them herself. She just can't... Not yet.

10. side by side

She's sitting on the couch, reading a book. There are candles burning, she likes the sphere they create. The soft glow of the fire is calming after a hectic day at work. And the past weeks, it has been hectic. Unbelievable so.

She bites her lips when she looks at the hour. Just ten more minutes. Give or take. And then Nick will arrive. She can't wait to see him. It's been a month since he kissed her. And they see each other nearly every day. But still. She still gets butterflies in her stomach every time she hears him or sees him or when his name appears on the screen of her cell phone or when he rings her doorbell or when...

A crazy giggle escapes her. She can't help it. He makes her happy. He really does.

Ding Dong.

She jumps up from the couch and all but runs to the door when she hears the doorbell.

"Hey."

Her tone is but half a question.

"Hello my darling."

Chuckling she opens the front door before opening the door of her apartment. Stopping herself from running downstairs and flinging her arms around him and hugging him as if she's never going to let go of him.

He smiles when he arrives in front of her. Wrapping his arms around her and kissing her, pretty passionately. She moans in his mouth and answers his embrace, pressing her body closer against his.

Freya smiles at him when they break apart. Brings her hand up so her fingers can caress his cheek. Before she leans in for another kiss. Almost desperate. And she clings to him. It makes him chuckle when he looks back at her after a couple of minutes.

"Hey, what's the matter? It has only been yesterday evening since you last saw me..."

Smiling, she lets her eyes lock with his. "I know. I just... I like being with you. I like hugging you. I... I love you."

Without a word he hugs her again, before he lifts her up, carrying her into the living room and carefully setting her down on the couch.

"Want something to drink?"

She nods while he walks to the kitchen. "Tea please."

He watches her from the doorway while he waits for the water to boil. The look in his eyes makes her blush a little.

"You are beautiful."

Her cheeks turn redder and she closes her eyes, shaking her head. Still not used to hearing anyone call her beautiful.

"You are..."

When she looks back up, he is pouring out the tea and sets himself down next to her. Pulling his legs up underneath him, and leaning against her side. Of course she wraps her arm around his shoulders.

Gently he starts kissing her neck. "Stay with me..?" A soft whisper against her skin.

Freya bites her lips, bringing her hand up to caress his hair. "I will."

8. you and I

She takes a seat near the window. Where it's light. Shrugging off her jacket, she makes herself as comfortable as possible on the chair. She's in for a long wait. Probably. She takes pen and paper and her iPod out of her bag. It's the perfect way to pass the time. To write. There is so much twirling around in her head. So much that needs to get out. And writing is perfect for that. One way or another it always seems to help. To get everything in perspective. A door is opened and automatically everybody looks up. Hoping. A name is called out, somebody reacts and walks inside. The others sigh and stay seated. It makes her smile. True, it is unnerving. Having an appointment and seeing the agreed on hour pass by. Half an hour. An hour. Sometimes longer. It is horrible. But the best orthopedists of the country are sitting here. And so you take the waiting with it. And it's pretty okay if you know it and accept it and be prepared for it. She won't deny she hates it as well. But there is writing and a book and her music. And really, if there's nowhere you really have to go to later on...

Three Doors Down is ringing through her ears. Her ears. She'll never put her music so loud that other people are bothered with it.

Every now and then she shifts on her chair. Trying to stay comfortable. Perhaps she should take a cushion with her next time. The thought makes her giggle softly and it earns her a surprised, questioningly, non-understanding look from the people near her. She just smiles at them and continues writing. Half an hour passed her appointment hour already.

Her cell phone vibrates in her pocket. The smile on her face widens when she reads Nick's name on the screen. How she loves him.

"Do you have any plans for tomorrow evening? x"

Shaking her head she starts replying. "Nope, no plans yet. x"

She's hesitating for a second, before she presses send. There is still so much more that she wants to say. So much.. But she won't put it in a text message. Won't bother him with it. He knows, anyway.

"Great. Now you have. :D How are you? Still waiting or miraculously had the appointment already? :p"

She knows he's trying to cheer her up. And it might be working. A little bit.

"Oh? And pray tell, what plans do I have tomorrow? :p Nope, still waiting. The appointment was only half an hour ago after all... :p x"

Looking at her watch, she suddenly gets nervous again. The results of the scan. The verdict for her shoulder... She has managed not to think about it, all day long. She's surprised she has held out that long...

The incoming message brings her thoughts back from being afraid.

< i>"Just you. And me. :-) <3 x"

"Miss Freya?"

A deep intake of breath, before standing up and taking her bag and her coat, walking side the room.

15. put your arms around me

She's crying when she's cycling home. The tears on her cheeks mixing with the raindrops falling down. No one would be able to tell the difference. Not that there is anyone near to see it anyway.

Without a care in the world, she slams the garage door shut. Hearing it echo a little. Not that it matters. Right now, it really doesn't.

Sobbing she walks towards the front door. Her bag slung over her shoulder. Hair dripping wet. She's lucky she had rain-gear with her even though the sun was shining brightly when she left home in the morning.

She closes her eyes for a second when she opens the door, hoping, so very badly, that none of her neighbours will come out to greet her. She can't handle people right now.

Quickly she runs up the stairs towards her apartment on the second floor. Ignoring the fact that her legs feel like jelly.

The keys in her hand jingle when she opens her own front door. It is closed just as quickly. Sighing she leans against the wood, the doorknob pressing hard in her back, before she lowers herself on the floor, pulling her legs up to her chest and wrapping her arms around her knees. She lets her head rest on them. Still sobbing.

Part of her feels silly for reacting this way. But she can't help it. The tears are coming and they won't stop. She's tired of this. All the stupid injuries, following up on each other. First her knee, then her back, her shoulder, her other knee, her foot, and now her other shoulder. It's one right after another. And they have, except for the first injury at her knee, all been solved with just some physiotherapy. But this shoulder...

She flinches when she hears her cell phone ringing. Nick

"Hello?"

"Hey darling. How was the doctor's appointment?"

There are new tears welling up in her eyes, and she tries to sound steady when she replies. Knowing he'll hear how her voice is quivering though.

"Not that good. My shoulder is hurt pretty badly. It's worse than they have been thinking for months. He even scheduled the operation already."

Just saying it makes her shiver again. And even though she said she can't handle people right now, she wants nothing more but him being right next to her and holding her and kissing her and telling her everything is going to be okay. She will not believe it, but she needs the reassurance and the comfort.

"Want me to pass by?"

She almost smiles when she hears his concerned question. As if he's reading her mind.

"If you don't mind me crying and being down and clinging to you and..."

He interrupts her before she can finish.

"Of course not. You know I don't. I'll be there in less than ten minutes. Okay if I just come up? Or do I have to..."

A soft chuckle escapes her while she shakes her head. "You have the key, no need to ring the doorbell. Do come right up."

"Okay, see you soon. And... I love you Freya."

"Just hug me and kiss me when you get here?"

It's not really a question but she still makes it sound like one.

"Of course. You know well enough you'll get a hug. Lots of them. And even more kisses."

Smiles she says goodbye, brushing the tears of her face. Putting away her cell phone, she looks around. Her apartment is still dark, she still hasn't put on the lights.

Sighing she pushes herself up again and walks into the living room. It's only then she realizes it's almost 8h30 in the evening, and she still hasn't eaten yet.

Quickly she puts a cooking pot filled with water on the fire. Pasta will do fine for now. She still has some left-over sauce in her freezer.

"Freya?"

She pokes her head through the open kitchen door when she hears Nick enter the living room.

"In here. I just realized I haven't had dinner yet, so I'm making some pasta."

She turns back to the fire when the alarm rings. The smell makes her stomach grumble. A soft moan escapes her when she feels his arms around her waist and his body pressed against her back. Closing her eyes when she feels his lips against her neck.

"Are you alright?"

She shakes her head once and moves to take a plate out of the cupboard.

"You want some?"

"Uhm..."

He hesitates only for a second. "Yeah please. You still got some parmesan in the fridge?"

Nodding Freya takes another plate and fills them both. Carrying them to the table.

He stops her when she wants to sit down. Smiling she sees how he opens his arms, inviting her. Biting her lip she hides in his embrace, feels how the tears are welling up in her eyes again.

"We'll get through this. You know we will. I'll be right here. Right here with you. And you'll be able to sport again after rehab. And..."

He gentle kisses the top of her head, tightening his hold on her.

"I love you. You know that, right? I love you so much..."

It's a chuckle and a sob at once that escape her and she nods against his chest.

4. a dozen roses

She wakes to an annoying bright white light. It makes her grunt and she closes her eyes again immediately.

"Freya?"

She turns her face towards his voice.

"Nick?"

Her voice is hoarse and it hurts to speak. Carefully she tries opening her eyes again. Blinking against the light. The darkness was much more comfortable.

"Take it easy."

His hand on hers, rubbing gently.

"But I want to see you..."

A mere whisper, a little whining, but in the stillness of the room, it sounds loud. She can imagine the smile on his face. Worried still. But a little amused as well.

"Hmm."

The soft moan escapes her when she feels his lips on hers. Secretly she's grateful she can keep her eyes closed just a little longer.

"Don't force it. Keep them closed if it still hurts too much."

She smiles and lets her hand reaches out. Blindly searching for his face. She knows she only finds it because he leans in into her touch.

"I love you."

Nick chuckles softly and lays himself down next to her. His arm draped over her belly, his hand stroking her arm and her side and her belly and her chest. The touch makes her shiver a little when he reaches out for her shoulder.

"I'm scared..."

Her comment makes that he stops the movement, scared to touch her shoulder and to hurt her. Gently he kisses her cheek. And then her other cheek. And her nose. Her eyes, very carefully. Before finally ending on her lips again. She kisses back, feels how there are tears welling up in her eyes, but she refuses to let them fall. Freya opens her eyes again when they break apart. Blinking a couple of times, but finally focusing on Nick's face right next to her.

"So, how drugged am I?"

Laughing Nick lets his fingers run through her hair. "Pretty drugged I think. Not feeling any pain in your shoulder?"

She shakes her head. "No, and I'm pretty glad for that. I know it will change soon, so..."

Finally she takes a look around the room. Plain and simple and... white. So of course the red roses on the bedside table immediately catch her attention.

Smile Nick watches her. "They’re from your volley team. They know how much you like them.”

She nods and bites her lip. It are her favorites indeed. And they all know it well enough.

“Remind me to send them a thank you mail..”

Nodding Nick leans forward, kissing her lips gently.

14. flowers and chocolates

She's sitting on the bench. Watching Nick and the others warm up. There's a pang in her heart when she sees how they start kicking and punching. The bench is far enough from the tatami for them not to see the tears that are slowly running down her cheeks. But she wants nothing more but to stand there together with them. And she can't... She won't be able for a while. Stupid shoulder. Stupid injury. Stupid body.

The music ringing through her ears is happy, but it still doesn't manage to cheer her up. Not while she is watching this training.

She sees Nick look at her. Mouthing if she's okay. She smiles and nods and ignores the fact that she is still crying silently. They both know that she is lying, pretending to be okay... Sighing she brushes away the tears that are rolling down her cheeks. Crying won't help her any further after all.

"Freya, can you step on the tatami for a second?"

Surprised she looks up. Seeing every face smile at her. Nick runs off the tatami, towards her, taking her hand in his own (minding her just operated shoulder) and pulling her up to her feet, kissing her lips gently. Before almost dragging her back over to the tatami, where everybody is waiting for her.

"It's been twenty year..."

Smiling she closes her eyes and shakes her head once when she sees where this is going.

"Twenty year since little Freya set foot on the tatami. And she is still here."

She feels Nick's arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side, hears the others giggle and joins them.

Smiling she takes the bucket of flowers sensei suddenly holds out to her.

"Thank you."

Her voice is hoarse when she speaks up.

"And, because we know this is a rough time for you. And because we hope you will soon be back with us on the mats..."

Smiling he holds out a box. Chocolates.

"And because we know just how much you love chocolate."

Chuckling Freya gives her flowers to Nick while she takes over the box of chocolates. It reminds her of the most famous line of the movie 'Forest Gump': Life is like a box of chocolates...

"Thank you guys."

They walk over to her and hug her. And she can't escape the groups hug that follows. Though all of them are careful for her shoulder. All of them worried.

"Don't worry guys, I'll soon be standing right next to you again, right here, on the tatami."

She looks over to Nick, sees how he winks at her, still holding her flowers.

"And now I'm going to let you guys train."

No one but Nick hears what she isn't saying. Because if I stay any longer on the mats with you guys, I'm gonna cry.

He walks right next to her when she goes back to the pile of tatami mats where she was sitting on, placing the flowers right next to her. Kissing her again before walking back.

Training continues and she exchanges funny and flirting gazes with her boyfriend. But there are no more tears. For the first time since she heard she'd have to have surgery to get her shoulder fixed, she believes all will turn out to be fine...

3. Proposal

She's whistling when she walks home after work. Friday afternoon. The sun is shining brightly and she's feeling happy and cheerful and... She can't wait to arrive home. There's a promise of a hug, and kisses, and a romantic dinner with candlelight that Nick made, and a weekend where nothing has to be done. She's fully intended to just enjoy it with her lover.

"Hey darling."

She smiles when Nick's cheerful voice greets her from the kitchen when he hears her entering the living room.

"Hmm, smells good."

She wraps her arms around his waist while he's stirring the soup. Gently she places a kiss between his shoulder blades. Of course he turns his head to claim a real kiss. It makes her smile.

Turning around she walks back to the living room. Smiling when she sees the candles on the table and a vase with roses and...

Closing her eyes she breaths in. "Apple candles?"

Nick hums from behind her, bringing in the soup.

"I hope you are hungry already? I hope you are pretty hungry. Because the soup is ready and I have a lot of food for this evening."

Chuckling she nods while she sets herself down at the table.

"You can't believe how hungry I am."

He raises his eyebrow when he catches her tone. Flirting. Meaning much more than that. Meaning something entirely different than food. Winking she holds out her bowl so Nick can pour soup in it.

"Thank you."

Smiling she sets herself down, before standing up again. "Forgot... What do you want to drink?"

"Just water."

She disappears back into the kitchen, humming while she opens the fridge, taking out the water bottle and wondering what she wants to drink.

She steps back into the living room a couple of minutes later, the bottle water and fruit juice in her hands. Her eyes wide open when she sees the two glasses of champagne on the table and the little black box standing in the middle of the table.

"Nick?"

Her voice is trembling and she bites her lip. They had spoken about marriage before. But...

Smiling, though she can see he's a little nervous, he stands up, holding out the box to her.

"Will you marry me?"

She giggles, once, before nodding and wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him.

"Of course I will marry you!"

He shakes his head once. "You didn't even take a look at the ring..."

His teasing voice while he opens the box. Smiles when he sees how her eyes, for the second time in five minutes, open wide. Inside, is a silver necklace, lying on a black velvet cushion. Two open hearts, entwined, as a pendant.

"Oh..."

Carefully she lets her fingers grace the necklace. Before she looks back up to him.

"I take it you like it?"

Once more she nods. "It's beautiful."

Smiling he takes it out of the box, walking 'till he's standing behind her, and putting it around her neck.

"You are beautiful..."

Biting her lip, she closes her eyes when he kisses her neck.

"I love you..."

His arms around her shoulders, his chest pressed against her back, and he lets his head rest against hers. Just holding her. As if he never wants to let go of her again.

13. on your arm

Smiling brightly she walks down the aisle. Her father right next to her, looking proud with his daughter on his arm.

Biting her lip when she sees Nick standing in front of them at the altar. He's shining as much as her father. She probably is as well.

"There you go my darling."

Smiling she hugs her father. Whispering 'Thank you and I love you' in his ear before turning towards her lover-soon-to-be-husband. He holds out his hand for her and she takes it without a second of hesitation, stepping forward so she is standing right next to him. They don't let go of each other's hand.

The ceremony is beautiful. And a little funny. And she tries her hardest not to cry when people are speaking about them and to them and... She fails the moment Nick starts telling why he's so in love with her and talks about their memories.

Looking around, she sees all her friends. All her family. They came over from Japan. The first time ever that they left Japan. All for her. She smiles at her mother. Sees how she winks back at her.

"And now, the vows. Freya. Nick. Will you care for each other and love each other, as you already have for years, for the rest of your life? Will you hold each other and support each other and help each other for the rest of your life?"

Smiling she hears Nick say 'I will.'

Smiling she says so herself.

"Then I now pronounce you husband and wife. Nick, you may kiss your bride."

Chuckling Freya wraps her arms around his neck, feels how his arms sneak around her waist. His lips are soft and she closes her eyes, enjoying the moment.

When she opens them again, she is in her bed, Nick pressed against her side, his head resting on her chest.

Rolling her eyes, she bites her lip to prevent herself from giggling. The dream seemed so real...

Carefully she brings her hand up, gently running her fingers through Nick's hair.

"I love you."

In response he snuggles even closer to her side. "I love you too."

A soft whisper.

"You're awake?"

He lifts his head and kisses her lips. "I think my kiss woke you up..."

His comment makes her eyes widen in surprise.

"You have a good timing then..."

He looks back at her, questioningly. She just shakes her head, closes her eyes again, and holds him close to her.

"I'm still a little tired. Mind if I fall asleep again?"

Smiling Nick kisses her cheek, and her nose, and the top of her head.

"Not at all. Sweet dreams."

Freya knows he still has a question in his eyes when he lays his head back down on her chest.

"I'll tell you about my dream later, darling of mine."

Smiling she feels how his fingers caress her side. His warm breath ghosting over her chest. It slowly lulls her back to sleep.
