Ruiqi strode into the restaurant like she owned it. (Really, her father did, but that was close enough for her.) Behind her trotted her security dog and the young man from Biotech she'd corralled into being her date for the evening.

"Your usual table?" the man at the door asked.

"I'm looking for..." she hesitated, scanning the crowd of diners over the man's head. "Ah! There they are!" Ruiqi blew past him, the dog at her heels.

She already felt the eyes on her, judging the young man, the dress, the trajectory she was taking across the restaurant. Ruiqi set the smile on her face like a dare and imagined the story she was telling. "Lizhen! You made it!"

The dark-haired woman and the younger man next to her looked up, their eyes wide and faces set with the look of soldiers. She thought she saw just a hint of confusion there, but they both hid it well. Consummate professionals at the age of... what, eighteen?

She ordered for all of them and made small talk until she was confident no one was paying any attention to them.

"Is it bugged?" Lizhen asked.

Ruiqi shook her head. "This place is warded against it. One of the reasons I come here."

Lizhen dragged her chopsticks through her noodles. "It's good." Her voice held a stiff note, like she could recognize flavor but didn't know what to do about it. Ruiqi's eyes kept drifting over to Remy, who was eating fast and unconcerned about what was going on around them.

"What you're proposing is not easy, but I can get you there," Ruiqi said.

Remy raised an eyebrow, quizzical and cute, and it was driving Ruiqi mad.

"Miy," she turned to her date. "These are the folks I told you about, the ones who are interested in Quetzalcoatl. Tell them what you told me."

The young man's face lit up. "It's quite amazing, really. She's been there since before the last war, the lightning all of Mei Guo doesn't know it's in love with." He continued on, describing the trapped spirit as if she were the subject of a courtly love poem, all metaphors and veiled references to power.

Having heard it all before, Ruiqi instead kept her eye on Remy. She moved closer to him, she pulled out all the stops talking to him. Ruiqi flirted all night and he never responded. The longer it went on, the harder she tried, as if each double-entendre was a gasp for air and she was a drowning woman.

Eventually Lizhen excused herself to the restroom and Ruiqi followed.

"Should I be offended?" she asked Lizhen. "I've never met anyone who didn't respond one way or the other... especially not someone who wanted something from me."

Lizhen just shrugged. "That's Remy for you, is all. He doesn't react. Ever."

"That sounds unhealthy," Ruiqi mumbled, but if Lizhen heard her, didn't say anything.

"If you're interested, you have to tell him straight." Lizhen took her hair down from the high twist it had been in. "Speaking of which, do you mind if I borrow your scientist?"

It took Ruiqi a minute to work out why she was asking permission. "Oh! Of course. We don't have anything, I just brought him to talk to you."

Lizhen nodded. "You may want to tell Remy that."

"I will."

The hunter turned to leave the restroom. "Oh, and be gentle with him. He's never been on a date."

Ruiqi considered this as she made her way back to the table, where Remy now waited alone. No wonder she found him so interesting - here was someone who didn't know how to play the games that drove her so crazy.

"Remy."

"Yes?"

"I think you're cute and I'd like to take you home tonight."

Remy looked over at Lizhen, who nodded. "Take her up on it if you want to, Remy. We're not going to hold it against you. You're going to hurt yourself if you stay so isolated all the time."

He considered that for a minute, and Ruiqi held her breath.

"I think I'd like that," he smiled at her, and she could barely remember dragging him home after that.

Safely tucked away in her apartment, Ruiqi snapped her fingers and the lights went out. A soft lantern glow from the streets filtered in, showing Remy just the soft outline of her body. She shrugged off the topmost layer of spells along with her dress, letting the magic and silk pool together at her feet.

She noticed Remy watching her and hesitated, waiting for him to say something. Remy only reached for her, pulling her down beside him, and if he noticed that the spread of her hips or the thickness of her jaw was any different, he said nothing.

She leaned in. He met her half way, and that was far enough.
