She tries not to cry too much as Daddy whispers a working over her knee, closing up the broken skin. It doesn't hurt anymore but she remembers how it hurt, and when she tells him he kisses her forehead and holds her close.

*

She balls her fists as Dad examines her broken, bleeding nose. They are afraid because they don't understand, he says. Avoid spellwork around humans, he says. Don't worry about a little blood, he says.

*

The human boy curls up on the ground, crying. His blood drips from her fingers. He keeps saying please. He's not afraid because he doesn't understand; he's afraid because he does understand, finally, what she can do to him.

*

You shouldn't have hurt him, Dad says.

*

You should have killed him, Master Dweven says.

*

The detective is curled up on the ground, dead. His soul screams, straining for the Deadlands but tethered in her grasp. She tightens her fist and pulls, eyes wide at the enormous tearing sound; his soul dissipates, neither here not there but obliterated as he deserves and she realizes, finally, what she can do to them.

*

At the end of her demonstration the entire garden has been transformed: green life twisted and curled, turned to ash and smoke. A neglected haunting can create a deadspot in a few years time but she has done so in a matter of hours. Your nose, Master Dweven says. I'm not worried about a little blood, she says.

*

Father falls to his knees, staring past Dweven at her and she runs to catch him and he collapses in her arms and it's too late it's years too late and he touches her face and says I should have, he says I'm sorry, he says do you remember, and she says she does and kisses his forehead and holds him close.
