“What happened?” Nolani asked, once her brother was safe in her caravan.

“Bandits,” he answered, entirely too cheerfully for her liking. “They figured out I might be worth something.”

“Why didn’t you write me? I would have paid whatever they asked.” So would Mother, but Mother would probably kill whoever made the exchange as creatively as possible.

“I figured I could string them along long enough that they’d give me a chance to escape.”

She buried her face in her hands. “That was stupid, Isshiri.”

“Maybe,” he acknowledged. “But it worked.”

“What if they’d…?”

“They didn’t,” he said. “I’m fine.”

He realized, right after he’d said it, that that was probably not the best thing to say.

“You got hurt,” his sister reproached.

“Only a little,” he said. “And…’Lani, I’m good at reading people. I knew how long to wait.” …best not to let her know how many times I’ve had to use that knowledge.

“You still shouldn’t have risked it.”

“I got out safely, isn’t that what matters?”

“No,” she said. “Well…yes, it is, but…it’s not the only thing that matters. Isshiri…”

He looked away, and sighed. “I’m sorry for making you worry.”

“Please be more careful?”

“I’ll try.”

Isselu hovered near his mother and uncle, blending in the way Aunt Sola had taught him so they wouldn’t send him away. He barely ever saw his uncle, and while he understood why Mamma was so upset…

A part of him wished he could live the way his uncle did. Not forever, but for a little while. See more of the world, have daring adventures, survive with wit and charm…

He knew he couldn’t. So he resolved to stick as close to Uncle Isshiri as he could, and get all of his stories so he could dream about another life.

Lonura understood, a little, why Isshiri hadn’t made contact. Not entirely, and she might be overthinking it, which he rarely did, but…

It was probably safer for him to remain an anonymous traveler of some means than the son of one queen and brother of another. His captors hadn’t sent a demand on their own. They likely hadn’t identified him.

She would keep her silence about it, though. When they’d first come across him, the injuries from his escape looked much worse than they actually were, and he was undoubtedly giving Isselu all kinds of Ideas.

But she did understand.
