Nelly stays silent while she is preparing dinner. She doesn’t want this silence. Wants nothing more but to talk. Now Rafael is finally in her life again. But she can’t find the words to tell him. She knows what she wants to say but when she opens her mouth to speak, the words refuse to come.

Turning around she looks at him, sitting on the couch in the living room. His sketch book on his lap. Twirling his pencil between his fingers. A pondering look on his face.

Smiling she walks over to him, setting herself next to him, wrapping an arm around his shoulder, kissing his cheek gently. Before she takes a look at the paper, expecting a blank white page. Instead she’s looking at a girl. Her eyes widen when she recognizes her own face. The sketch is beautifully drawn. And realistic. Perhaps a little too realistic. It makes her shiver.

“When did you…?”

She knows he can’t have drawn it in the fifteen minutes she was in the kitchen.

“During the past week. At quite moments.”

He gives her the book and she decently looks at it. At herself. There is a tear running down one of her paper cheeks. And her eyes… Her eyes are… Even if drawn without color… Powerful and scary and sad and pain and… So much pain in her eyes.

“I’ve looked at you. Even when you thought I wasn’t watching. I’ve seen you when you thought you were alone, when you let your guard down, when you weren’t pretending to be okay. All these impressions, stolen glances… They told me all you can’t put into words. Your eyes…”

His fingers caress her cheek and she avoids his gaze.

“They told me your tale. They told me of your pain and your loss. They told me…”

She shakes her head to make him stop. Putting the sketch book on the little table before turning towards him. Still not looking at him. But she wraps her arms around him, pressing her body against him. Needs to be close to him. Needs his comfort.

“Don’t worry Nelly. Even if I don’t remember. And even if you can’t tell me.”

He takes a deep breath and loosens his hold on her a little bit. Only to be able to put his finger under her chin so he can tilt her head.

“Don’t worry Nelly. I love you. And you love me. You brought me back. I need nothing more but you in my life, in my arms. It doesn’t matter. It’s the past. It’s over. And it’s not important anymore…”

She sobs and finally looks at him again. Smiling a little, before hiding herself in his embrace again.

“I love you. Love you. Love you.”

Smiling Rafael tightens his hold on her.

“I’m not going to let you go.”

She nods against his chest. “And I’m never going to let you go again.”

His fingers that are running through her hair are reassuring and for the first time, she really believes that life can finally begin again. Their life, another chapter in their life, can start.
