His eyes are closed, the stone wall pressing sharp and cold in his back. Hands balled to fists, resting in his lap. If he could, he would cry. But his tears have long been spilled.
“Alex!”
He doesn’t react when he hears his mother shout out for him. Even if he can hear the worry in her voice.
“Rafael.”
Nothing more but a whisper. A whimper.
“ALEX!”
A soft sigh escapes him when he stands up again. Grunting when he opens his eyes and the light blinds him.
“Coming.”
Taking a deep breath he starts walking. Surprising his mother when he suddenly appears from behind their house. She had never expected him to be so close.
Without a word he walks past her. Not even stopping when her hand reaches out and just barely touches his arm.
“Alex..?”
Sadness and pain.
It hurts him that he cause her so much trouble. And she doesn’t even know why he behaves this way. And he can’t tell her. That is the worst. He just can’t…
He tried. Has tried so often. But… Ever since Rafael has been erased… He still remembers him, his older brother. And he seems to be the only one.
Their parents. They don’t remember Rafael. In their minds now, there has never been another son. When he came back home after the uprise, there was no prove of Rafael anywhere. No second bed, no clothes, nothing. Erased. Completely. Except in his mind…
The neighbours. Their friends. Not even Nelly… Rafael’s friend, his lover, his wife. She didn’t remember. She doesn’t remember. The ring he gave her when he proposed. Vanished.
He tried to talk to them. Tried to make them remember. It never worked. When he started speaking, he suddenly got a lump in his throat. And no words left his mouth…
It was his price for betrayal. Being the only one who remembers an erased person and not being able to talk about it.
He has cried for his brother. Has begged for forgiveness. Has hoped for him to come back. Has prayed to forget everything himself.
But he knows it will not be granted. He’ll have to live with it. Forever.
He swore one thing. Whatever he had done, despite his betrayal and knowing this is what he deserved, he swore revenge. He’d continue what his brother had started. He’d bring the King down. Whatever the cost. Whatever the means… His plan was risky. And it would make everyone hate him. It would make him hate himself. But it was the only way he saw. The only way to have even the slightest of chance to succeed.
And he promised himself something else… If he could, he’d bring Rafael back. He’d bring back his parent’s other son. He’d bring back Nelly’s lover. He’d try…
“Alex?”
“I love you mum.”
Without turning around he walks back into the house. Going up to his room and immediately locking the door. There are plans to be made…
