"Jack!"

That voice, that delighted voice—Jack straightened up from his inspection of an apple and found himself looking straight at Spencer Carson.

"Spence!" he said, equally delighted. "Hey! What the hell are you doing here? I thought you moved to DC!"

"I did," Spence said, and shrugged fluidly. "I'm visiting. How've you been, Jackalope?"

Jack grinned at the old nickname, the one Egg had coined when particularly high and that no one else ever used. "Pretty good. Got a job, got some friends." Got a crush, but he didn't say that to Spence, not after how it had ended between him and Arnie. "You?"

Spence broke into a smile, wide and bright like sunrise. "I'm... amazing, actually. I met this guy, Jack, and I... he's fantastic." He ducked his head, grinning, blushing. "His name is Neil."

"Congratulations," Jack said, and meant it, he really did—he didn't know why his voice rang a hint insincere. "You two living together?"

"Yeah," Spence said, and ducked his chin again. "Mom's kind of mad, we've only been dating two months, but... I know. I just... I know, you know?"

Jack opened his mouth to ask Spence what he was thinking and thought suddenly of Felix, smiling just that way, ducking his own chin in shy pleasure, eyelashes shading his cheeks. "Yeah," he said, slowly. "I do know."

Spence smiled at him, relieved. "I knew you would. Want to get coffee? I'll buy."

"What, so you can brag about your Neil?" Jack asked, and laughed when Spence nodded, grinning broadly. "Okay, sure, let me just let my sister know I'll be late."

"Good," Spence said brightly, and poked at the watermelons beside him.

Jack pulled out his phone to text Charlotte, and pretended not to feel the ache.

Aw, Jack. Reminders of the past can hurt, but try to be happy for your friend!

He loves him even though it was a long time ago and he cannot love himself.

JACK.

He's just made of love for other people.

LOVE YOURSELF TOO JACK.

Like we love you.

(This is fabulous. Thank you.)
