There is panic on Nick's face when he enters the hospital. Panting and sweating. He has raced towards the clock to get here.

He's almost running when he crosses the hallways towards the staircase. Ignoring the slight disapproving looks of the nurses he passes. There is no way he'll slow down. In fact, he only wants to go even faster...

He takes the stair with two or three steps at a time. The elevator would only have made him wait for too long. Stairs are faster. It doesn't matter that it tires him.

Out of breath he arrives at room 414. He almost smiles when he realizes there are no rooms that end on the number 13. Superstition. Freya would have liked the number though...

He softly knocks on the door once before silently opening it. He smiles bravely when Risa looks at him. Trying to encourage her. His eyes immediately taking in the sleeping form of his girlfriend.

Without a word Freya's mother stands up and walks over to Nick. Hugging him. Closing his eyes, he wraps his arms around her shoulders. She looks frail. And tired. And scared. So scared. Just like him.

Freya's father is sitting on a chair at Freya's bedside. His hand on top of hers. He nods once when Nick greets him.

"Are you staying?"

Nick nods. Immediately knowing what she's asking.

"I'm staying. The entire night. And tomorrow. I'm not leaving her side."

Smiling sadly, Risa caresses his cheek.

"Go to school tomorrow. She wouldn't want you to miss classes for her."

A sad smile in return and a shakes of his head. A soft whispered "I know".

Her hand still resting on his shoulder while she turns around to her husband.

"Let's go home darling. You need to rest. And Nick is staying here. He'll take care of her. He'll..."

She looks back at him and he nods in confirmation to her unspoken question.

"I'll call when she wakes up."

Grateful Risa kisses his cheek and Freya's father shakes his hand. They walk out of the room with their arms around each other.

A soft sigh escapes him when he sets himself on the chair where Freya's father was sitting just a couple of minutes ago. Taking her hand in his own. His thumb stroking gently.

"Hey girl."

Biting back tears, he watches her. Just watches her. His heart stopped when Risa called him just two hours ago. It was in the middle of a class. Small group, interactive. His teacher could have killed him with his eyes when his cell phone started ringing. He was fully intended to put it off when he say Risa's name flashing on the screen. Of course he picked up. She would never call him when he had classes. Except if something had happen to Freya. And she had to go in for chemo today...

A soft sigh escapes him and he leans forward, pressing a gently kiss on her cheek.

"Oh Freya..."

He doesn't stop stroking her hand. His other hand goes to her face, fingers gracing her cheek and running through her hair.

"I love you darling. Please... Wake up. Please..."

Closing his eyes he lets his head rest in their entwined hands. Every now and then whispering a soft 'please'.

Nick looks up again when a nurse enters the room, checking in on Freya.

"You're her partner?"

He nods once. Keeping a hold on her hand.

"Her mother told us you're staying the night. Is that right?"

He nods again. "Yes."

There is no need to ask if it is allowed. It doesn't matter. He stays, no matter what. The nurse can clearly see it in his eyes.

"Shall I bring you an extra bed?"

Smiling slightly he shakes his head.

"No, I'll manage."

Nodding the nurse takes off again. Only to come back some minutes later with something to eat.

"You look as if you haven't eaten yet."

Gratefully Nick accepts the plate. "Thank you."

She just smiles, places her hand on his shoulder for a second, before she leaves again. They both know he won't eat much. But at least it is there.

In the silence of the room he lets his thoughts go back to the phone call two hours ago.

"Nick? It's Risa..."

He can hear the tears in her voice. And it confirms his fear.

"It's about Freya. She..."

Risa takes a deep breath before she goes on.

"She had chemo today - which, of course, you knew - and... We don't know what happened. But she fainted. In the midst of the chemo. The doctors are busy searching what happened. But it seems possible that her resistance is just so low that the slightest of things can knock her off her feet."

He can hear Freya's father mutter something in the background and he can see Risa roll her eyes, despite the tears, and take his hand in hers.

"I'm on my way Risa. I can catch my train in little less than half an hour. I'll be at the hospital in less than two hours."

They say goodbye and Nick turns around again. Of course all his classmates and the teacher are looking at him. Questioningly and concerned. It wasn't hard to notice how his hands and his voices were trembling.

He just needs to look at Chris, knowing his friend has already figured it out.

"Freya fainted during chemo. And she still hasn't woken up. I..."

Chris' hand on his shoulder is warm and comforting.

"Go, I'll brief you about the next classes and warn the teachers."

Smiling sadly Nick shakes his head, turning to face their teacher.

"Your girl?"

He just nods.

"Go. I know what it is to love someone who's trying to beat cancer. She needs you there."

A surprised look on all their faces.

"Thank you sir."

Quickly he turns around, grabbing his stuff and runs to the bus so he can catch his next train.

A soft groan makes him look up. Hopefully he watches her. Sees how her eyes flutter open.

"Freya?"

The fear is clearly present in his voice. Shaking. He can't help it.

"Nick?"

A soft whisper. Hoarse. And her hand that closes around his.

"What happened?"

Nick leans over her, hugging her, before he answers.

"You fainted during chemo this morning..."

He sees how she carefully turns her head towards the window. Knows what she is thinking.

"Morning? How long was I out? It's getting dark outside already..."

"Nearly eight hours."

His fingers caressing her face. Moving from her cheek to run through her hair again. He can feel it starting to get thinner.

"How are you feeling?"

She closes her eyes for a second.

"Tired. And... Weak. Other than that, I feel okay."

He kisses her lips gently. Whispering a soft "I love you. So so much."

Smiling she wraps her arms around his shoulders.

It's only when she looks back at him, their eyes locked, that she realizes her parents aren't there.

"Mum? Dad?"

"They stayed here the entire time before I arrived. They left an hour ago. I'll call them in a second."

She smiles at him. Small smile. But a smile.

"Thank you. Can you pass them through to me?"

Nick nods while taking his cell phone and dialling Risa's number. It doesn't take more than two rings before she picks up.

"Nick?"

"She's awake Risa. And she's okay."

He can hear her relieved sigh.

"Wait.. I'll put you through."

Smiling he hands his girlfriend the phone. Keeping her hand in his while she talks to her parents.

"Okay. Byebye. I love you guys too."

Freya hands him back the phone. Keeping her eyes locked on his.

"Tired?"

She nods once. "Despite having been out for eight hours. Yes, I'm pretty tired. Talking is tiresome. I never knew..."

He laughs softly.

"But I don't want to go to sleep. Because you'll leave and I don't want that."

He hears well enough what she'll never voice. "I want you to stay with me."

"I'm not leaving. I'm staying. I'll always stay..."

A surprised look on her face when he stands up again and takes off his shirt and jeans. Smiling she moves to the side of her bed, making some place for him.

Quickly he crawls next to her. Their arms around each other, holding each other close.

"I'm scared."

A soft whisper against his chest. And his hand running soothing circles on her back.

"I know. But we're all here for you. And it will be okay. And..."

He can feel some of her tears against his skin.

"Don't cry baby. We'll make it through. You know we will..."

She nods once. Sniffling.

"But that doesn't make the fear go away..."

Carefully Nick tightens his hold on her. He doesn't need to tell her he's just as scared.
