The girl who poked her head into his room was tall and tan, with long auburn hair pulled back into a messy ponytail and brilliant blue eyes. “Hey,” she said. “I’m Erin. I’m the RA for this floor.”

Dom stood up, self-consciously brushing off the front of his shirt, even though there was nothing on it. “Hi. I’m Dominic.”

“Dominic,” Erin repeated, stepping into his room. She was wearing a flowery skirt and sandals, and a bright yellow top that reminded Dom of sunshine. “Freshman, yeah?”

“Yeah.”

“Wow, you lucked out.” Erin looked around the room approvingly. “A single your first year. Not a bad deal. You putting together a loft bed?”

“Yeah,” said Dom, feeling his cheeks flush. He was trying to put together a loft bed, anyway. There were instructions included and everything, but Dom had never had the opportunity or desire to learn much about constructing things, so he was going slowly, trying not to make a mess.

“Well, sorry to bother you.” Erin’s smile revealed very shiny, white teeth. “Catch up later?”

“You can stay,” Dom found himself saying. Heat rose in his face again. It was his first day in Bloomington and he knew Katie would never let him hear the end of it if she could see him now.

Well, she couldn’t see him now, could she? She was a three hour drive away. And Erin was very pretty.

“Okay,” said Erin brightly. “I was just going around, saying hi to all the new residents. You have a chance to look around much yet?”

“I did a tour here over the summer,” said Dom. “But it was just a few buildings.” The campus was huge, and Dom was almost certain he was going to get lost. As soon as he was done with the bed he was going for a walk, to scope out all the buildings his classes were in, so he’d be prepared come Monday. “They showed us a dorm room in Eigenmann.”

Erin laughed. “Kinda different?”

“Little bit.” Much nicer, for one. Carpet on the floors. Larger rooms. And a single. Small, but all his.

“I like this building,” said Erin. “I lived here my freshman year, too, but in a double. When I got the RA position I requested this place right away.”

“That’s good.”

Erin laughed. “Come on, it’ll be fun. All the RAs have a ton of activities planned for the year. Really hope to see you at them.”

Dom had heard about some of the activities, and he’d kind of scoffed, but if Erin was going to be there…

He probably needed to make more of an effort to make friends. He knew a lot of people from his high school had chosen to go to IU, too, but no one Dom had hung out with much. Which wasn’t many people to begin with. So he was on a campus with fifty thousand strangers. And he wasn’t sure how to approach becoming friends with any of them.

He wondered if he could count Erin as a friend, after two minutes of talking to her, or if she was just doing her duty as an RA.

He wondered if she had a boyfriend.

He kind of wanted to smack himself for even entertaining the thought. His first day. Maybe there was something wrong with him. Maybe he was too desperate. Maybe she reminded him too much of Alicia, and that was definitely not a place he wanted to go.

He knew from experience it was no good trying to talk himself out of a crush. He would just have to avoid Erin. He was in no position to look for romance right now.

Then, Katie’s voice in his head: You’re an idiot.

For liking Erin, or for trying not to like her? He didn’t even know her, for god’s sake. She was just a pretty girl with a bright smile and a yellow shirt.

And she was looking at him oddly, because he had just been standing here, chewing his lip while he debated with himself. God, he was such a freak. And his first full day of college was not going well. “I’ll be there,” he said, not sure if that was true.

She grinned again and left his room, tossing an “Awesome. See ya!” over her shoulder as she did so.

Dom shook his head. He wasn’t going there. It was a bad idea. He had to be an adult now, and falling for his RA three seconds after meeting her was what dumb high schooler Dom would have done.

“Just forget about her,” he told himself fiercely.

There were forty-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine people he hadn’t met yet. He was sure that was a much better place to start.
