Summary: It's Tsukino's first date with Kazu. She hopes everything goes well.
Warnings: nothing much, but tooth rotting fluff skip
slight mention of cross dressing
Notes: MY LAST BLUSH! I'm pretty excited to finally finish a color and to be finished with this piece. There's a reason to a lot of things that tie in to Saya and Miki's treatment of Tsuki, but that's for later. Well enjoy! If I mess something up please let me know.
“I-I can’t wear this!” Tsukino exclaimed as she threw the blue dress back on the pile.
Miko sighed and rubbed her forehead. “Why not?”
“Because it’s too short.”
“It barely goes above your knees.”
“It’s still too short.” Tsukino mumbled as she took a seat on her bed next to the pile of clothes.
Miko slumped in Tsukino’s desk chair and rubbed her forehead again. “We have to find something. Your date is in three hours.”
Tsukino bit her lip as she looked at the pile of clothes. She knew her date with Kazu would be soon, but the problem wasn’t the outfits. The problem was nothing looked good on her. She spent the whole week drawing and making different outfits for her date, but when she put them on, she saw the same dumpy girl her mother fussed over at her sister’s wedding. Nothing seemed to work for her and she wanted to look good.
Tsukino twirled a lock between her fingers as she messed with her t-shirt. “Maybe it’s not too late to buy another outfit…”
Miko groaned as Mina shut her book and walked over to the bed. She looked at the outfits, then turned to Tsukino. “What’s wrong with them? They’re all brand new.”
Tsukino looked at her socks.“Um, they’re not right…”
Miko walked over to the bed and stared at the outfits. “You bought all these for the season! I think they look fine.”
“Well there are other things I can wear…” Tsukino trailed off and looked at her closet.
Mina touched her shoulder and looked in Tsukino’s eyes. “Tsuki, are you sure?”
Tsukino sighed and buried her face in her hands. “I want Kazu to see me as a girl, but it’s probably easier if I met him as a boy. I mean I wouldn’t have to worry about all this!” She got off the bed and paced around the room.
Miko stopped staring at the outfits as she walked over to Tsukino and took her hands. “Listen, Kazu is going to see you and that’s all that counts. You’re going to have a great time. If you don’t, you can always come home. Our phones will be on, so don’t wait to call for anything, okay? Now we can get another outfit, if you want or we can do something else. It’s up to you.”
Tsukino looked down at their hands then up at Miko. “I-I don’t want to get another outfit. I want wear the ones I have, but I don’t have any makeup and Miki told me I can’t be pretty without it.”
“You don’t need makeup. If you would like to use makeup then that’s fine. It’s a choice, not a need.” Mina spat out. She cleared her throat and turned to Tsukino. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to get so angry.”
“It’s fine. I know Miki can be a bit much.” Tsukino said.
Mina mumbled under her breath as Miko squeezed her hands. “You are pretty! Don’t worry we’re going to help you find the perfect outfit!”
Mina nodded as she flipped through the outfits on the bed.
Tsukino smiled. “Thank you, I appreciate it.”
“Anytime! Now let’s find something for you.” Miko walked over to the pile of clothes and moved clothes around with Mina.
Tsukino nodded and took a seat in the desk chair. I hope we can.
*~*~*
An hour later Tsukino chose a simple white dress with a black half jacket and matching white shoes. She still didn’t think she looked right for a date, but it was better than nothing. She nervously checked her watch as she looked around for Kazu. They agreed to meet in front of the bookstore and continue their way through the area. She liked the shopping area near her job. There was a lot to do and many restaurants to choose.
She turned around at the sound of her name. Kazu waved from his place in front of the bookstore. Tsukino waved back, she smoothed out her skirt on the way over to him.
Can’t back out now. “H-Hi Kazu, I’m not late am I?” Tsukino asked.
Kazu shook his head. “Nope, you’re just in time!” He stepped back and looked over her dress with a small smile. “You look very nice.”
“Thanks, you do too.” Tsukino said as she took in his causal outfit of an open blue button down, black t-shirt, and matching shoes and slacks. She messed with the strap of her purse as she looked down at her shoes.
“So, where do you want to go first?” Kazu asked.
Tsukino shrugged. “Um, I don’t know. What do you want to do first?”
Kazu pointed to the nearest restaurant. “Want to get something to eat?”
“Sure, that sounds good.” Tsukino mumbled as she messed with her strap.
Kazu smiled and walked over to the restaurant with Tsukino who tried not to squeeze her strap on the way.
*~*~*
Tsukino fidgeted with the edge of her white dress as she looked over at Kazu. Kazu looked up from his menu and smiled. Tsukino gave a small one back before she turned back to the menu.
“S-So, um…what do you want to eat?”
“I’m not sure yet. How about you?”
“I’ll get whatever you’re having.”
“You can get anything. This place has a lot of great food.”
Tsukino shook her head. She was never good at choosing dinner whenever she chose at home no one liked it. Well, her dad liked her choice, but he wasn’t picky. Tsukino bit her lip as she looked over the choices. There was so many. What if he didn’t like that she ate salad? Or he had a problem with her and meat? She could hear her mom’s voice in the back of her head telling her the weight she would gain after today.
“Tsukino.”
Tsukino snapped out of her daze and looked up at Kazu. He offered a small smile and nodded towards the menu.
“It’s okay Tsukino. You can pick anything you want.”
“Are you sure?”
Kazu nodded as his fingers brushed her hand. “Yeah, I’m sure.”
Tsukino took his hand with a sheepish smile. “I’m sorry, I’m kind of nervous about today.”
Kazu grinned and linked their fingers together. “That’s alright, I’m nervous too.”
“You don’t look nervous.”
“I’m sure your hand is getting covered in sweat right now.”
“Eww,” Tsukino drew her hand back and wiped it with a napkin.
Kazu laughed. “How do you feel now?”
Tsukino placed the napkin back on the table and took his hand again. “I feel much better.” She grinned at the red she saw on the tips of Kazu’s ears. She took a breath and sat back in her seat, feeling easier than she did in the morning.
*~*~*
After lunch, they walked around, looking at the different shops along the way. Lunch went better than Tsukino expected, but the date wasn’t over yet anything ecould happen. Tsukino twisted the strap on her purse again as they stopped in front of a craft store. He grinned and gestured to it.
“Hey, you said you liked to make things right?”
Tsukino nodded. “Just a few things, mostly dresses and stuff though. There’s something I want to make, but I don’t think I have enough.”
Kazu pointed to the door. “Want to see if they have a sale?”
Tsukino shook her head. “No, no it’s fine. I’m sure I can’t buy anything anyway.”
“Are you sure? My mom goes here all the time and she finds a bunch of stuff on sale.”
Tsukino looked back at the store, her fingers itching to touch some of the thread and material inside. She remembered the times she wanted to go in similar stores, but her mom and Miki complained so much that she stopped asking to go. Tsukino looked over to see any irritation in Kazu’s face, but didn’t see any. She figured it was worth the risk to ask.
“Um do you mind if we go in?”
Kazu shook his head. “Not at all. Whatever you want to do today, we can do it.”
Tsukino couldn’t remember the last time someone asked her that, that wasn’t her friends. She quickly recovered from her shock and pointed to the door. “I want to go inside.”
Kazu smiled and walked over to the door. “Let’s go.”
*~*~*
Tsukino smiled at the bag in her hands. “I can’t believe I got so much for only ten dollars!”
Kazu chuckled. “See, I told you this store was awesome.”
Tsukino nodded her excitement not waning, until she checked her watch. “I can’t believe we spent two hours in there. I’m sorry, I just saw all that thread and colors and--”
Kazu shook his head. “Don’t worry about it. I get that way whenever a new upgrade comes out.”
“Sorry, it’s just I normally only can spend like 15 minutes in a craft store before my mom and sister start complaining.”
Kazu’s eyes widened a bit in surprise before he frowned. “Really?”
Tsukino nodded. “Yeah, I hope you didn’t find it too boring.”
“I didn’t, I never went to a craft store on a first date before. It was fun.”
Tsukino flushed lightly as she looked at the bag. She didn’t mean to show her excitement so early, but it was hard to hide it when she was surrounded by fabrics and thread. She waited for Kazu to get irritated, but it didn’t happen. She wanted to be happy at the same time she didn’t know when Kazu would get fed up and leave. Tsukino sighed softly, catching Kazu’s attention.
“Um, is everything okay?”
Tsukino wanted to kick herself for the uncertain look in Kazu’s eyes. “Y-Yes! I just, um, I mean, I’m sorry this is probably a boring first date.”
Kazu shook his head. “It’s not, I’m really enjoying my time with you.” He rubbed the back of his neck as the tips of his ears turned red again. “I really like being around you Tsukino.”
Tsukino almost dropped her bag as unfamiliar warmth traveled throughout her body. She didn’t know what to say her tongue felt like cotton in her mouth. She knew the silence wasn’t helping anything by the way Kazu shifted next to her. She swallowed the lump in her throat and reached for his hand.
“I like spending time with you too Kazu. I’m really enjoying myself.” Tsukino smiled and linked their fingers together.
Kazu grinned as he squeezed her hand. “I’m glad.”
Tsukino squeezed back and resisted the urge to bounce on the balls on her feet. She forgot what it felt like to go somewhere without having anything to worry about. It felt nice. They started walking by the shops again when Kazu gently tugged on her hand. Tsukino looked at him as he pointed to the movie theater.
“Want to watch a movie? That’s a proper first date location.”
Tsukino nodded. “Um, do we have enough time?”
Kazu checked his watch with a nod. “Yep, want to see something?”
“Sure, if that’s alright with you.”
“Anything you want to do.”
“I would like to see a movie.”
Kazu grinned as they walked over to the movie theater.
*~*~*
The comedy they picked had an easy plot to follow and different jokes throughout the movie that made it enjoyable. Tsukino didn’t want a heavy movie to watch. She didn’t want to take her attention off Kazu. She looked at him out the corner of her eye during the movie as she ate small handfuls of her popcorn. Kazu was different than she expected. He asked her what she wanted throughout their time together. He didn’t mind the movie or them sharing one drink.
It felt nice, but she worried that things were going too well. That the other shoe was going to drop and she wouldn’t be prepared for it. She wanted to call Miko or Mina for help, but that would be rude. Tsukino tried to relax as she reached for the drink the same time as Kazu. Their fingers touched and she snatched her hand back.
“Sorry.” She whispered.
“That’s okay. I like holding your hand.” Kazu whispered back.
Tsukino grinned and shyly turned back to her popcorn. Kazu took a drink before he placed it on the other cup holder on his side. “Tsukino?”
“Hmm?” Tsukino said softly between some kernels.
Kazu reached over and pulled up the armrest between them. Tsukino placed her popcorn in her lap and wiped her hands with a napkin. He took her hand gently in his own. Tsukino gently squeezed his hand, she felt giddy when he squeezed back. She took a chance and leaned against him. She felt good about taking the chance when Kazu pulled her closer.
“You smell nice.” Tsukino said softly.
“Thanks, you do too.” Kazu whispered back.
Tsukino didn’t pay attention to the rest of the movie, but she didn’t mind. It looked like Kazu didn’t either.
*~*~*
After the movie, Tsukino and Kazu walked around and talked about anything on their mind. She learned more about the shows Kazu liked and the books he read. Kazu became very excited when he mentioned his graphic design job. She liked Kazu’s smile it made her feel warm. It helped push her mother’s disapproving voice out of her mind.
Tsukino didn’t want the day to end. She knew it sounded silly the day would end eventually.
When the sun started to set, Kazu offered to walk Tsukino to her car. She didn’t park too far from the shopping area, but she didn’t mind. She could spend more time with Kazu. Tsukino tried to make the walk to her car as long as possible.
They walked to her car faster than she thought. They stood by her car door and turned to each other. Tsukino shyly looked at her bag before she looked up at him.
“Thanks Kazu, I had a great time. I’m sorry about spacing out so much.” Tsukino smiled sheepishly.
“No problem, you’re cute when you daydream.” Kazu grinned.
Tsukino felt warm again as she rested her hand on the handle of her car door. “Thanks for everything today. I really had a lot of fun.”
“I did too.” Kazu’s ears turned red again as he locked eyes with her. “Um, there’s something I want to do before I leave.
“What’s that?”
“This.” He leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss against her lips.
Tsukino’s eyes widened in surprise as her body tried to catch up with her mind. She thought she did so many things wrong today, but it turned out to be the opposite of it. She placed her hand on Kazu’s shoulder and leaned into the kiss. Tsukino thought Kazu could hear her heart with the way it pounded against her chest when he wrapped his arm around her waist and his hand rested against her cheek.
Kazu pulled back with his hand against Tsukino’s cheek. He brushed their lips together as Tsukino nuzzled his hand. “Can I take you out again?”
Tsukino smiled. “I would like that.”
Kazu grinned and leaned in for another kiss. Tsukino moved forward at the same time and bumped her nose against Kazu’s. She giggled while Kazu chuckled. She found his lips after the second try. Feeling confident, she wrapped her arms around his neck as Kazu placed his arms back around her waist. They didn’t do anything more than feel their lips against each other, but it was enough.
They pulled back slowly and stared in each other’s eyes. Tsukino wanted to pull Kazu close again. She knew if she did that, they wouldn’t leave.
Kazu broke out of their daze first and kissed her cheek. “See you Tsukino.”
Tsukino squeezed his hand. “Bye Kazu. I’ll text you when I get home.”
“Okay, bye.” He squeezed her hand one more time and walked away.
Tsukino watched him until he disappeared down the street. She got in her car and rested her forehead against the steering wheel with a smile. She felt lighter than she did in a long time. She didn’t dress in something fancy or put on a lot of makeup like Miki suggested. She knew her mother would berate her for her movie and food choices, but that couldn’t be helped. Tsukino couldn’t remember the last time she made a decision her mother liked.
However, she didn’t worry about it.
For once, she did things her own way and they turned out fine. She had a wonderful time with a wonderful guy.
She couldn’t wait to do it again.

Is Tsukino genderqueer then?

Well it's more Tsuki dressed as a boy to avoid Saya and Miki's comments on her being a girl. When she dressed as a boy their comments didn't hurt as much. If that makes sense. Though Tsuki is telling me that could be true since we're still talking about it.

It is! Well there's a slight spoiler with Kazu. There's another reason why these two click so well. ^^
