Taz saw the mast splinter--the Lefret ship had held a mage in reserve, goddamned intelligent bastards--and dove for the Captain.

Too late. It hit his head with a sickening, melon-splitting noise, and she felt something slam into her arm and swore.

He was breathing, that was something.

Blearily, she looked around--they were losing, there was no way they were gonna pull a victory out of this mess.

She grabbed her sword with her undamaged hand--not her dominant one, but she wasn't hopeless with it and yanked at the ocean to make a visible waterspout around it.

"Emerald Star, to me!"

They listened. Gods damn it all, they listened, even though she didn't have any kind of official rank or nothing, just a sword and a waterspout and a loud voice.

"Where's the Captain?"

"Down," Taz said, grimly. "Kes, can you get us out of here?" She wasn't a navigator, but--hell, Fil had been right, Unthreaded were lucky, least when there was no other way to make your luck.

Kes eyed the sky. "Not far enough. You?"

"Cover us," Taz said grimly to the others. "Dunno how long my adrenaline's gonna hold me. And someone make sure the Captain's breathin', yeah?"

Again, they listened, and Taz smiled inside herself--hell, maybe it was bad of her to think on it, but they did listen. She had a knack for this command thing. Might fast-track her to her own ship.

Just hope Captain Fil don't have to die for it, she thought.

"Taz!" Kes said, urgently.

Taz nodded, and slid her sword back into her sash to have her hand free. "East."

"East," Kes agreed, grimly.

They took a deep breath as one, and shoved the Star away from the skirmish, and kept shoving until they saw land to the east.

"Think I'm gonna pass out now," Taz said. "Watch the sword."

"Taz--"

She hit the ground--naturally landing on the broken arm, because the gods don't like it when we get too proud--and then the pounding sea filled her and washed it all away.

Yeaaaah, retreat's the best option here. And I hope Taz is going to be okay along with the Captain. Better not to have anybody die.
