"Nick? Did something happen?"
He looks down at her - lying in his arms on the couch - a surprised look on his face.
"Why do you ask that?"
He can feel her shrug against his chest. She's avoiding to look up at him.
"Freya?"
She just shakes her head. "Why don't you answer?"
He can hear the pain in her voice. Not only because of the chemo and the cancer.
"I met Tina today."
She shivers in his arms. The name alone is enough to make her feel bad.
"What did she say?"
For a second Nick wonders how she knows. How she could have possibly known.
"Lies. As usual."
His fingers gently stroke through her hair. "You know I don't believe her, don't you?"
She nods. Just once. Of course she knows.
"Who else was there?"
She leaves him no time to wonder. "You wouldn't be this upset if she told only you..."
"How can you tell I'm upset?"
It's only now she looks up, a sad smile on her face, and yet she still avoids looking directly in his eyes.
"I don't know. I just... I could just tell. I don't know what gave you away. It was a feeling... Apparently correct."
He leans forward and kisses her forehead.
"Yeah, you were right. I am upset. Really upset. I just don't understand why she won't leave you alone. Why she still keeps on telling lies about you. And it just... Frankly, it just pisses me off."
Of course she notices how he balls his hands to fists. Gently she lays her own hand atop of his. Feeling how it trembles, just a little, before he relaxes under her touch.
She knows why. And actually, he does too... Tina loves Nick. And yet he chose Freya over her. Nick just doesn't believe that is all the reason Tina needs...
"Sorry, I didn't want to bother you with it."
She shrugs and reaches out to kiss him. "It doesn't matter." A soft whisper against his lips. They both know it does though.
Nick is doubting whether he'd continue talking about it or switch to a safer subject. He's glad she takes the decision for him.
"So, we're going swimming tomorrow?"
He nods and lowers his head so he can nibble her neck.
"Oh, don't do that..."
She can feel him smirk against her skin. Knowing just how sensible she is there. Knowing she doesn't really mean for him to stop. Her hands that take a firm grip on his T-shirt is all the reason he needs to continue teasing her.
Smiling he lets his fingers run over her sides. Making her shiver again and again.
"Nick." A pleading moan and his hum as an answer.
Looking back up he sees the small smile on her lips. It broadens the one on his own face. The look in his eyes tells Freya enough. "I knew I could get you to smile."
"You're an angel. And I love you."
Grinning Nick kisses her again.
"I bet I can do more than to just make you smile..."
She raises her eyebrows, challenging. Wanting nothing more than him trying to cheer her up. She doesn't want to be sad.
Once more his kisses her neck, sucking slightly. Automatically her eyes close and she moans softly again. It is followed quickly by a surprised yelp when his fingers tickle her sides.
"No! Nick, don't!"
She laughs while he mercilessly continues his tickle-attack a little while longer.
Breathless she hides herself in his embrace when he finally stops. Clinging to him, trying to catch her breath and brushing away the laughing tears.
"See..."
The tone of his voice is victorious and it makes her chuckle before she kisses him. Deeply. Hard and demanding. Needing every inch of contact. Needing his body against her and his arms around her. Needing to feel safe and loved.
