Nolani tapped on Isshiri's door. He was leaving for Feredar before dawn, and, knowing him, was too wired to go to sleep. Besides, she wanted to give him her gift in private, and this would be her last chance.

"Who's there?"

"It's me. I've got something for you."

Isshiri opened the door. He'd made some concessions to how late it was and how early his start was--he'd changed, and removed his prosthetic, and braided his hair back, and so on. "You don't have to give me anything, 'Lani."

She just smiled at him, and pulled the present out from behind her back.

His eyes widened. "Oh, 'Lani..." It was a brand-new prosthetic. She'd worked ages on it, knowing exactly what his complaints about his current one were--how the cup for his stump didn't fit right, no matter how he fastened it, so he had to add itchy layers of padding so it wouldn't chafe, how it made an odd extra joint where it met his leg and made him feel even more self-conscious, the way it made his footsteps sound hollow...

"Make sure it fits?"

Wordlessly, he nodded, and sat down to tie it on--she'd traded one of her favorite of her glass pieces for the softest leather she could find to make the fastenings. She helped him stand and rebalance, then he pulled away from her and made a careful circuit around his room. She couldn't fix the hollow steps, but it moved smoothly with his leg. If she didn't listen, when he rolled his pantleg down over it, she could just barely tell it was there. Someone who didn't know ahead of time probably wouldn't be able to at all.

Isshiri came over to her and threw his arms around her. "Thank you," he whispered. "It's perfect."
