It took almost an hour of wandering, after getting separated from his brothers, for Sorell to admit to himself that he was hopelessly lost.

It wasn’t that he was bad at directions or keeping track of things (except, all right, he hadn’t been paying much attention to where he was going, more interesting in finding the best spots to ambush imaginary bandits), except usually he wasn’t by himself in the woods. He wasn’t supposed to be, Mamma and Papa were always very, very strict about that.

Except he’d somehow lost track of his brothers, and he didn’t recognize this glade that was pretty and sun-dappled (and smelled decidedly un-foresty, more like candied ginger) at all.

Not that he was scared. He was seven, which was definitely too big to be scared just ‘cause he’d wandered into a strange clearing. Besides, his brothers couldn’t be too far. And it was still light out. So there wasn’t any reason to be afraid.

Jumping about a mile into the air when he heard someone behind him didn’t mean he was scared. If he was scared he would have screamed, and all he did was sort of yelp a little.

Really.

And that was ‘cause he fell funny when he jumped and it hurt. Not ‘cause he was scared. It was okay to yell ‘cause it hurt, even though he was seven.

:Are you all right?: She sounded concerned, but a little amused, like Mamma when Andir’s puppy got stuck somewhere and whined to get out.

“Who are y—oh!” He turned around, and there was a unicorn.

No one ever saw unicorns. Most of the bonding-creatures near the city weren’t equine at all, let alone all the way but special.

:I’m Vedia,: she answered. :Are you all right? You fell.: She moved over to him and touched his cheek with her nose.

“Uh-huh, I’m fine, I think. I just landed funny. I jumped, I didn’t fall.” He reached out and stroked her nose, thrilled at how soft she was.

:Are you all alone out here?: Vedia asked next.

He shook his head. “No. Well, um, sort of, I lost my brothers.”

:Why don’t I help you find them?: she offered. :You can ride, if you want.:

He stared at her, not quite believing it. Bonding-creatures only let their partners ride them ever. “Oh,” he whispered.

Vedia nuzzled him. :Yes, exactly.:

“Y-yes, please,” he said, and she held very still while he pulled himself onto her back, still hardly believing it. He wasn’t very good at riding, but she was special, so he was pretty sure she wouldn’t let him fall or anything. “I think they’re that way,” he said, but he wasn’t sure.

:Then we’ll start there,: she said, and then they were moving.

She didn’t have reins or anything, so Sorell just rested his hands on her neck and let her pick her way through the woods. Part of him wanted the ride to last forever, but a bigger part of him couldn’t wait to get back to his brothers. None of them had bonded yet, not even Merill. And Vedia was a unicorn.

Who could follow his thoughts just fine even when he wasn’t talking, based on the ripple of amusement he got from her.

As they made their way through the dappled, gingery forest, Sorell realized he was really, really happy he’d gotten lost. Even if it had been just a little bit scary.
