Kirana hugged her daddy goodbye, then watched the gates shut behind her.

"Welcome, Kirana," a thin--and familiar--woman in the robes of a low-ranked priestess said with a smile. The lack of her title--though pointed--wasn't unexpected. Kirana actually found it oddly comforting. Especially with her...unusual side talent, she'd rather just be one of a crowd of novices. "I am Sister Lomesshi."

Kirana bowed in response. "Thank you, Sister." It was nice to finally have a name to attach to the face she'd been seeing ever since she announced her intentions to come here to Mamma and Daddy.

"You'll have a day to settle in, but after that, you'll be treated like any other novice," Sister Lomesshi said, with a faint hint of warning.

Kirana nodded. "I understand, Sister." She hesitated--she knew priests were no stranger to ambition, even those who had genuine vocations. But she'd seen Sister Lomesshi time and again, and never gotten an impression of threat from her.

"Is something wrong, Kirana?"

She shook her head. "No, Sister. Um. Is the dormitory all girls?"

"Not until age thirteen," Lomesshi told her. "But you'll share your room with another girl."

Kirana nodded. "All right."

"And if you have any problems with your roommate, or anyone else, for that matter, please find me," she said. "I'm assistant to the Mistress of Novices, so I can mediate most issues, and pass them on to Sister Derako if necessary."

...she seems nice. She's probably safe. And I've seen her so many times, and never doing anything bad, so she must be a big part of my life... "I will," she said, then bit her lip. "Sister?"

"Yes?"

"I have a...I don't know if Mamma said, but...there's something different about my magic." She finished in a rush, not quite willing to look up at Lomesshi.

"Different how?" she asked, sounding curious.

Kirana took a deep breath. "I'm a seer."

Lomesshi stopped. "Are you sure?"

She nodded. "I've seen all sorts of things. Some good, some...not." She shivered. "I can't...I can't control it, or find something specific, just...whatever the fire shows me, I see."

Lomesshi turned and crouched down to look her in the eye. "Do you want me to keep this a secret, or tell the temple head?"

"...do you have to tell him?"

"Not right away," Lomesshi said. "But sooner or later, I will." She sighed. "I'll delay as long as I can, and research control. But there hasn't been a seer in..."

"Two hundred and forty-three years," Kirana supplied quietly.

"Yes."

"Please help me," Kirana said. "I...I don't want to be used."

Lomesshi squeezed her shoulder and stood up. "I'll keep your secret as long as I can."

"Thank you," Kirana said.

Lomesshi smiled. "I told you. You can come to me if you need help."

Kirana smiled back, tentatively.

"Now let's go find your room."

"All right," Kirana said. She shifted her bag to her other shoulder, then followed the priestess into the temple complex. She didn't have a fire to confirm it, but she was pretty sure she was going to be all right here.

I like the way you wrote this, where the reader really wants to believe Sister Lomesshi will help, too, but has that little bit of doubt because of Kirana's worry. :)

Awww, Kirana. I hope she can trust Lomesshi. I hope she's safe.
