Notes: Anna is about 14 in this while Marie is two years older. Rene is the King of the Ibertians, a country that lies next to Monde.
Anna sighed as she watched her sister play cards with the King.
Marie was a horrible bluffer. Her face told everything.
The other girl called Eva, she seemed to be better. But she wasn’t paying attention to the game; she had her hand on Niek’s codpiece.
“I think I’ve won again,” Niek boasted. The King laughed.
Anna rolled her eyes.
Eva turned to look at Anna. Anna mentally compared herself to her rival. Eva was blonde and plump while Anna was stringy and had hair the color of dirt. She felt herself blushing.
“Don’t you think it’s a bit inappropriate to have her here?” Eva asked Niek.
Niek turned to look Anna. She smiled slightly at him.
“Nah Anna’s a good girl. Besides she plays a mean game of prime.”
“That she does,” Marie added.
Anna hid her smile.
Eva cleared her throat. “But Niek, I thought we were going to have some fun.”
“We are having fun? Aren’t we having fun, Rene?”
The King laughed and looped his arm around Marie.
“Yes we’re having loads of fun.”
Eva smiled seductively. “I know a way we can have more fun.”
Rene grinned at Eva. Marie looked away while Niek dealt the cards.
“How do you plan to have more fun?” Anna asked.
The four of them turned to her.
The King laughed.
“One day you’ll have such fun,” the King said. “If you’re lucky.”
“I don’t understand.”
Marie stood up. She walked around the table and came over to her sister.
“Let’s get you back to the Queen’s quarters.”
“Why?”
Marie pulled Anna up.
“Marie!”
Marie steered Anna towards the door.
“Goodbye Niek!” She called over her shoulder.
“Goodnight Anatje,” he called back.
Marie shut the door behind them and grabbed Anna by the arm.
“I know the way, Marie!”
Marie stopped in the middle of the corridor and turned to her sister.
“What’s wrong with you?” Anna asked.
Marie clicked her tongue.
“You should stay away from Niek,” Marie said.
“He’s my friend, Marie.”
Marie sighed. “I don’t think he’s a good influence on you.”
Anna scoffed. “And you are?”
“Maman told me to look after you, Anna.”
Anna stuck her chest out. “I can look out for myself, thank you.”
Anna began walking back to her quarters. Marie followed after her.
“Look Anna, just watch yourself around him and his friends too.”
Anna stopped. “Even the king?”
Marie’s eyes darkened. “Even the king.”
Anna opened her mouth to speak but Marie had turned away.
“You know the rest of the way.”
“Marie are you alright?”
Marie waved over her shoulder. “I’m fine.”
“But…”
Marie had already turned the corner.
Anna turned and walked slowly back to the quarters she shared with two other girls. She wondered what her sister meant by watch herself. Niek wasn’t anything like the rest of the king’s friends. He was nice and he didn’t treat her like a child. She smiled as she thought of him.
Anna turned the knob and walked into the room. Everything would be alright. It always was.
