“Mr. Myles,” Eileen said, raising an eyebrow. “We’re closed.”
“I know.” He grinned. “Max asked me to meet him here.”
“Did he now.”
“We’re going out for drinks.”
“That sounds like fun,” she said, leaning in. “Word of advice, Mr. Myles? I like Max. He’s a good guy. Don’t hurt him and you won’t have to find out the hard way how good I am with a knife.”
That caught him off guard, she could tell, but he grinned to make up for it. “Noted,” he said. “By the way? You can call me Sam.”
She smiled. “Sam. I’m Eileen.”

“Eileen, there’s a guy out here just…hanging around,” said the maître d’, walking into the kitchen.
Eileen rolled her eyes, moving for the door. She pushed it open and called, “Sam, stop lurking out there and come here.”
He perked up and smirked, heading toward her. “Hey.”
“Max, your date is here,” she said dryly.
Her sous chef grinned sheepishly and walked over. “Sorry, things are running a little late tonight,” he told Sam, leaning in and kissing him.
Sam flashed him a sly grin. “You just like to keep me waiting.”
Eileen snorted, leaving them to flirt in peace.

“Sam,” Eileen said, surprised to see him. “Max had the day off today.”
“I know,” Sam said, and shrugged. “I just…”
She eyed him critically. “Sit down,” she told him, and he did, looking surprised. “Tell me what’s wrong.”
“It’s nothing. It’s stupid.” He moved to stand.
“Sam.”
He stopped. “I don’t—how do you do that?”
“I’m talented,” she said tartly. “Answer my question.”
“How do you tell someone how much you care about them?”
She smiled. “Like that, Sam. You just say it.”
He gave her a rare sincere smile. “You’re something else, Eileen.”
“Of course I am.”

Eileen waved when she spotted a couple of familiar faces walk into Dan’s. “Honey?” Torey asked her curiously.
“It’s Sam and Max,” she said as they made their way over.
“Hey, Eileen,” said Sam. He grinned at Torey. “Mr. Corlioni. Been awhile.”
Torey laughed. “It’s Torey.”
“Join us,” Eileen said.
“You don’t mind?” Max asked.
“Of course not. Now sit.”
“I’ve discovered that it’s best just to listen her,” Sam said.
“Please, I work for her, you think I don’t know that?” Max asked, grinning.
Torey laughed. “Yeah, well, I live with her. Believe me, he’s right.”
Eileen only smiled.

“Sam! Max told me the good news.” She hugged him. “Where are you guys looking?”
“We’re hoping to find a small place in Manhattan,” he said. “If, by some stroke of reality, that pipe dream falls through, then a better neighborhood in the Bronx,” he added dryly.
“I know Max won’t play this card,” she said, lowering her voice conspiratorially, “but you should definitely make sure to bring up the fact that you’re both close personal friends with Eileen Corlioni.”
Sam laughed. “Eileen, have I ever told you how much I like you?”
She grinned. “Oh, Sam. I already knew.”
